Ocean City Deck Rescue

This deck looked fine from the street. Underneath, it was a different story. 👀

Our crew opened up this Ocean City home last week and found exactly what salt air and standing water do over time: rotted wood hidden behind the column wraps and spongy plywood right in front of the porch posts. That’s the kind of damage you don’t see until you step on it.

Here’s how we fixed it:

🔨 Cut out the soft decking and replaced it with new plywood
🛠️ Fiberglassed and feathered the patches so they blend into the existing surface
✨ Gelcoated the entire first-floor deck for a clean, uniform finish
🏛️ New white PVC column wraps, fastened with stainless steel so they hold up to the salt air
⬆️ Extended the upper deck about 7" so rain sheds off the edge instead of soaking the posts below

The original railings went back on, refit to the new column spacing, and the deck is ready for winter.

The reason this matters before nor’easter season: that deck surface is what keeps water away from your framing and your sliding door sills. Matera Builders has been working on shore homes since 1988, and as an Andersen Elite Certified Contractor, we look at the whole opening, from the door to the deck it seals against.
