Sweden has built some of its smallest “homes” to make the country’s housing crisis impossible to ignore.

Housing company Riksbyggen calculated how much space an average 25-year-old could afford to buy based on income, savings, current mortgage conditions and local apartment prices.

The result: just 1.9 m² in Stockholm, 3.1 m² in Gothenburg and 4.5 m² in Umeå.

Riksbyggen then built those dimensions at full scale, complete with elements such as a bed, kitchen and bathroom, as part of its “Visning av verkligheten” initiative. The structures are symbolic installations — they are not for sale and are not intended for permanent living.

The project is intended to show how difficult it has become for young adults to enter Sweden’s housing market. According to Riksbyggen, in at least 111 Swedish municipalities, the average 25-year-old can afford less than 10 m² of housing.
