In August we said we’d fund fifteen spaces for women and families in transition this year. $150,000. Out loud, in public, no take-backs.

We’re at $13,000. Our first partner application came in after a site visit, and Space One is starting to feel very real.

The honest part: it took us seven years to do fourteen spaces. Fifteen in one year means we can’t keep funding this the old way. So we’re cooking up a few new ones. Some you’ll recognize. A couple might surprise you.

Joy Street Design is 15. 🎉

What started as a night class and a hunch has grown into more than 175 homes, studios in Oakland and Atlanta, a truly unreasonable amount of saturated paint and patterned tile, and zero all-white kitchens. 😍

Quietly, our nonprofit, Joy Street Initiative, has been growing alongside it. Since 2018, JSI has transformed 14 spaces for organizations serving women and families in transition.

Now, the goal is not a bigger JSD. It is a bigger JSI.

Instead of spending our anniversary budget on one fabulous night, we are launching Fifteen Spaces: fifteen complete space transformations, $150,000, and one year to make it happen.

It is bold enough to make me nervous.

H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y T O M E !!!

I’m writing this from the patio of a Willamette Valley w**ery. It’s a smaller trip than I usually take but as I turn the corner on 40 😂, I couldn’t have wished for a better trip. W**e tasting, time with friends, pretty views and good weather. 10/10 - highly recommend.

So many fun things happening this next year! Can’t wait to explain more in the next few weeks.

(If you would have told 12-year-old Kelly in the ghettos of Chicago that this would be her life…just so proud of myself and my choices 😂)

I’m in a book!! :)

This gorgeous tome is “In the House: Celebrating America’s Leading Black Interior Designers” by Alton LaDay with Phaidon and Monacelli, and featuring a beautiful foreword by Patti Carpenter.

I’m deeply honored to be included in this book, and even more grateful I was able to celebrate the launch in New York with so many designer friends I don’t get to see often enough.

Over the years, I’ve noticed there are plenty of events in the design community and plenty of ways to meet people at the surface. But the true gems, the real relationships, come from being in the small rooms where you can actually talk openly. And there just aren’t enough of those rooms or many easy ways to get into them.

That, plus how much we both love a good meal, a great glass of w**e, and honest conversation among friends, led Michel and me to create one ourselves. The Salon is that room. We’re introducing it to you first with our mentoring lunches for emerging designers, the Open House, and there’s a lot more on the way.

I swear this is still an interior design account 😂😂

Feeling nostalgic and found these pictures of one of our first whole home projects! This project is 10 years old now and the kitchen still makes me so happy and proud of what we accomplished.

These were the days of me hustling alone - many things I don’t miss about that but many that I do. I remember the consultation for this one like it was just last year. And I remember the immense joy that came from figuring out this space planning challenge.

Either way, this was a stunner!

This weekend, I finally made my way to for their Andre Tally Leon exhibit. I don’t pretend to have more than a superficial knowledge about him but it was fabulously done and great to see the fashion. The thing I loved the most was the attention to detail and various sized mannequins that really told a story about his evolution - not just body changes but facial edits as well. They told a wonderful story. Bravo.
