Tradition Meets Innovation:
Roosevelt Intermediate School CAD/Fab Lab

Roosevelt Intermediate School opened in 1926 and is identified as a Historic Site in the Town of Westfield’s Historic Preservation Masterplan. This aged building is constructed with materials of the period, such as the original red brick and hardwood maple flooring, both of which showed tired wear of 100 years of use and just about as many layers of paint.

The Westfield Public School District needed a new, modern space in this historic building for their STEM program, which had been operating in a classroom without appropriate power, equipment, storage, and facilities. The size and location of an unused Wood Shop in the building was the ideal space for a new STEM lab.

A glass display area welcomes students to the lab, showcasing their work while giving them views of the spaces beyond. Deeper into the labs, the renovation plan included a transformation of the old wood shop into two new learning spaces separated by a glass partition: one side for design area and the second for fabrication. The glass partition provided a physical and acoustic separation between the spaces while allowing supervision of the entire lab. Two storage rooms flank the main space and provide an area for 3D printing, laser cutting, material and project storage.

The project restored the original historic building’s character, but at the same time incorporates modern technology, equipment and finishes, juxtaposing and highlighting new versus old. The preservation of historic elements paired with modern functionality strikes a perfect balance, ensuring the legacy of the building while supporting the District's forward-thinking goals.

Sometimes we have the most discerning clients! ...like these 4th graders who were excited to hear a design and construction update for an addition and renovations happening at their school! FKA's President, Michael Bieri, AIA, PP, shared the design plans and construction photos with the 4th Graders who had some insightful questions about the work going on at their school.

Some of our FKA crew on the jobsite: "It takes a village"... or in our case, a firm, to put a building together. We each have our own unique talents that, when combined, create some amazing architecture!

The high school experience has evolved to a point where learning is no longer limited to the four rectilinear walls of a classroom. Learning these days happens anytime and anywhere that there is space available. Hallways, once lined with clunky metal lockers on both sides are becoming a thing of the past as today's students find less and less of a need for a locker.

We can we repurpose these lifeless areas of old, empty lockers into something much more inviting that will be used by the today's students to stimulate small group learning, conversation, and social interaction while creating an amazing sense of space!

Steel.

In our view, this is one of the most exciting parts of any project. After weeks of planning and fabrication, hundreds of numbered steel pieces are sequentially delivered, methodically hoisted, and bolted together with a quick precision unlike any other trade. It is this exciting time when we are first able to see the shape of our designs rise out of the ground into the third dimension. It is at this point that we can begin to experience and appreciate the proportion and shapes of the spaces to come, all of which will be based off of the dimensions and lines of the steel.

First Impressions:

Some scientific studies say that a person's first impression is made within the first 7 seconds. How do you capture that first 7 seconds to make it last? We, as Architects, strive to find that coveted, memorable period of time and make it the best it can be in our work. But how do we apply that to a building that already exists? How can we change the arrival to a building, in the first 7 seconds, to create that awesome first impression? How can we do this and make an aesthetically pleasing and functionally accessible entry remodel?

Well, here is how...
