Grouting the well as soon as the casing is installed—now there’s a novel idea.

The area around the well casing is called the annulus. This space needs to be as clean and open as possible to ensure proper grout placement around the casing. Grout, typically either a bentonite clay product or cement-based material, creates a watertight seal around the casing and helps prevent surface water, contaminants, and bacteria from entering the well.

Typically, the upper 20 feet of a well is drilled through soil or highly fractured and unstable rock. If the casing is installed and the well sits for an extended period before grouting, this material can fall into the annular space and compromise the ability to properly place grout around the casing. Once that space begins to collapse or fill in, you can no longer pump as much grout into the annulus as would have been possible immediately after installation.

Maybe that explains why some companies charge a lump-sum grouting fee for up to 10 bags, rather than charging for the actual amount of material used. A slight conflict of interest there, if you ask us...

We lost a small dewalt tool box and a milk crate full of rachet straps and chain off the back of a pickup around 3:40 to 3:45 Wednesday 5/13.
