We get this call every single year, and it always plays out the same way.

"The basement drain has been a little slow for a few months, but it just backed up."

Here's what actually happened: it was never a little slow. It was a main line filling up gradually. The house kept working because there was still SOME room in the pipe. Then one day there wasn't, and now there's water on the basement floor.

Slow drains don't fix themselves. They also don't stay the same. They're a progress bar.

Reminder, because this is the week people forget: go disconnect your garden hoses.

Here's exactly why it matters.

When a hose is connected, water is trapped in the spigot and in the pipe behind it. The first hard freeze turns that water to ice. Ice expands. The pipe splits — often inside your wall, where you can't see it.

Then it thaws. And now you've got a broken pipe with the water on.

People find out in spring when they turn the spigot on for the first time and water comes pouring into the basement.

Two minutes today:
• Disconnect every hose
• Drain them and store them
• If you have an interior shutoff for the spigot, close it and open the outside spigot to let the line drain
• Consider an insulated faucet cover for exposed spigots

This is genuinely one of the highest-value maintenance tasks a homeowner can do. Costs nothing.

Safety post. Please read this one all the way through.

If you smell gas — that rotten egg smell — do this in this order:

1. Don't flip any switches. Not lights, not fans. Don't unplug anything. A spark is a spark.
2. Don't use your phone inside the house.
3. Get everyone out. Pets too.
4. From outside and away from the building, call 911 and your gas utility.
5. Don't go back in until someone tells you it's safe.

Do not try to find the leak yourself. Do not try to fix it yourself.

We're DOT Gas Certified and we handle gas line installation, repair and testing for appliances, ranges, fire pits, generators and heaters. But when there's an active leak, the emergency call comes first. Always.

White crust on the faucet. Spots on the glasses no matter what you do. Soap that won't lather. Skin that feels dry after a shower.

That's hard water, and a lot of the Pittsburgh area has it.

It's not dangerous to drink. But it's quietly expensive.

All that dissolved calcium and magnesium leaves scale behind — inside your water heater, inside your dishwasher, inside the pipes themselves. Scale in a water heater means the burner works harder for the same hot water. Scale in appliances means shorter life. Over years, it adds up in the pipes too.

The signs are easy to spot once you know them: crusty buildup around fixtures, cloudy dishes, dingy laundry, and using way more soap and detergent than seems reasonable.

A water softener isn't a luxury item in a hard water area. It's the thing that keeps everything else from wearing out early.
