Did you know that setting your thermostat to 65°F when it's 90°F outside won't cool your home any faster? Standard air conditioners operate at one speed: full blast. They provide the same amount of cooling regardless of whether you set the target temperature 2 degrees lower or 20 degrees lower. The unit will just run for a longer period, which can risk freezing the evaporator coil.

On extreme weather days, keep expectations realistic. Standard residential air conditioners are engineered to handle roughly a 20°F difference between the outside air and the indoor air. If it's 100°F outside, your system will struggle to get the house below 80°F, and running it continuously to force it lower can cause system exhaustion.
