The angriest email I ever sent was about a number that was wrong.

For three weeks I kept hearing the same thing.
A GC owed us about $100K overdue.

Three weeks of hearing it and I'd had enough.
I blasted out a heated email to everybody.
Pay up or we stop work.

Then I did what I should've done first.
I pulled the numbers myself.

They weren't as delinquent as I'd been told.

I shouldn't have sent that email.

Here's what I actually got wrong.
I didn't act on my own information.
I acted on someone else's frustration.

Frustration is loud.
Data is quiet.
And I let the loud thing drive.

That's the last one leaving my desk unchecked.

Huge shoutout to our crew for spending long days out in the summer heat installing over 800 feet of conduit and pulling feeders for new electrical panels as part of a local school upgrade. They also added panels for new HVAC equipment for the school. Projects like these take planning, precision, and a team that’s committed to getting the job done right.

2 journeymen applied. 90 people applied for apprentice.

We posted a few job listings before Christmas. That's what came back.

Not a hiring problem. A pipeline crisis.

In Connecticut the apprentice-to-journeyman ratio is one to one early on. Can't bring on more apprentices without licensed electricians to supervise them.

90 people want to learn the trade. Nowhere to put them.

Nationally, for every 5 electricians retiring this year, only 2 are entering. The workforce is projected to shrink 14% by 2030 while demand jumps 25%.

I've got 20 employees. Trying to get to 30 by year end.

The bottleneck isn't people who want to work. It's licensed electricians who can train them.

Other states have looser ratios. More flexibility. Easier to build a pipeline.

Connecticut makes it harder than it needs to be.

I'm not saying lower the standards.

I'm saying the system needs to let contractors build the next generation faster. Because right now we've got 90 people knocking on the door.

And only room to let 2 of them in.

The three years I stopped chasing money are the years it finally showed up.

1.6 million to 7.3 million. I know how that sounds.

Like something you say after you've already got it.

But I ran this business backwards for 15 years, so I've earned the right to say it.

When I chased money, I undercharged to stay busy. I took jobs I shouldn't have. I drove good people out because I couldn't afford to slow down.

The money stayed small.

The three years the number finally moved were the three years I stopped aiming at it.

I priced the work right. I hired people I had no business affording yet. I built relationships that outlast any single job.

The money showed up after.

Money is a lagging indicator. It tells you what you did six months ago. It doesn't tell you what to do next.

Want to know your revenue next year? Don't stare at your revenue.

Look at who you're hiring. Look at how you're pricing. Look at whether your customers would hire you twice.

The number follows the work.

It never leads it.

Most electricians suck.

Am I sorry to say that as a fellow electrician?
No. And here’s why.

I sucked too once. It’s not because I’m not skilled enough to do the work. I was a solid electrician, like most electricians out there you see promoting their services…

The problem is not the electrical skills. It’s the business skills or the lack thereof. AKA they suck at the biz side of the coin.

Most electricians struggle with the things that make or break a company.
They don’t communicate well.
They don’t follow up.
They don’t always deliver what they promise.

Nobody ever taught them how to run a business the right way.
How to manage jobs, talk to clients, or keep systems organized.

So they just do the best they can with what they know.
And that’s why customers end up frustrated. That’s why our trade gets a bad name.

It’s gotten to the point that the simple fact that you show up on time is considered great already… In this trade.

I’m not saying this to take shots at other electricians. Many of them are my friends and when I tell them this to their face, they agree.
I’m saying it because someone needs to.

If we want the industry to change, we have to start calling out what’s broken.
Everyone has a story of an electrician who messed up a job.

It’s time to make that the exception, not the rule.
