It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our longtime Brother, Mentor and friend, Jerry “Hoppy” Hopwood.

Hoppy began his electrical career as an Apprentice Wireman and worked his way up through the trade, eventually becoming High Voltage Supervisor and later General Supervisor of Power Operations and Maintenance at Y-12.

Later in his career, Hoppy continued his work with Bechtel Jacobs at K-25 in Power Operations and Maintenance, where he played a part in transferring the electrical power system to the City of Oak Ridge.

His knowledge and experience were unmatched, but it was the respect he earned from the people who worked beside him that truly spoke to the kind of man he was.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Hoppy’s family, friends, former crews, and coworkers during this difficult time.

We have linked his obituary below:

On August 31, we welcomed 58 new Apprentice Wiremen into IBEW Local 270. Making it the largest apprenticeship class we’ve ever had. Every one of them is already on the job, learning the trade and building a future for themselves and their families.

Being sworn in is a special moment, and we’re proud to share it with this group. To our newest Brothers and Sisters we welcome each of you to the Local. We’re glad you’re here, and we’ll be cheering you on as you grow in this trade.

We tried to get everyone in the photo, but getting this many aligned together was harder than it sounds!
