For most yards around here, years. Shade and thirsty roots wear that ring down every summer. Fall is when new grass under a tree finally gets a fair shot. The leaves come down and the light gets back in. Our crew seeded and strawed this one in September.

For most front lawns around here, it is the sunny stretch by the street. The grass goes thin and straw-colored patches show up, just like in this yard.

Grass seed season is wrapping up. But sod can still go down this fall, so you do not have to wait until spring for a full, green lawn.

For most yards around here it's the big shade tree out front, like this one at a job we did in September, still fully green.

When do you cut your hostas back? 🌿

The dry flower stalks can come off today, but the leaves should stay until the first hard frost turns them to mush. Until then those big leaves are still feeding the roots for next spring.

Once they flop, cut them to the ground and clear them out so slugs have fewer places to spend the winter. Our crew clears the whole bed and hauls every bit of it away. Fall or spring, which camp is your house in? 👇

What's the strangest plant that ever moved into your flower bed? 🌿

On this front bed it was pokeweed, the tall one with dark purple berries hanging off bright pink stems. It looks harmless, but the berries are toxic to kids and dogs, and birds scatter the seeds all over the neighborhood every fall.

Our crew cut it down and cleared it out of the bed. 🐶

Only a couple of weeks. That's about how long fall seed takes to show green. This front yard was one of ours last month: worked up, seeded and covered in straw. Ugly on day one, and that's exactly how it should look.

What's hiding under the overgrown bushes by your house? 🤔

At this house it was four boxwoods and a river rock bed. Our crew snapped the first photo at 1:10 PM and the second at 2:52 PM. Same bed, same day, with every bit of the overgrowth cut back and hauled off. 🍂

Clearing beds now means the fall leaves land on rock, not on a jungle.
