Your tomatoes are probably hungry 😂

My sister doubted me when I said we had grown over 100lbs of tomatoes this year, but we officially weighed our crop and are over the hundred mark already with more on the way!

Yes it’s September, but I’m still going to be harvesting into early October if the frost stays away because I’ve been feeding my plants all summer long. That’s where espomaorganic comes in

Their Tomato Tone is the only thing that I feed my plants with, and I apply twice a month. The boost of phosphorous is key for encouraging more blooms which will then lead to more tomatoes, and I apply along the drip line before watering or a rainstorm 🌧️

I’ve eaten three tomato sandwiches and four pots of sauce already this week so what else should I make with all these tomatoes?

This kale trick actually worked 🤯⁣

I’ve been seeing people online pulling their lacinato (dino) kale through the holes in tongs to remove the center stalk, and I thought I’d give it a try myself. I was honestly pretty skeptical, but I was always annoyed that I had to do it by hand, so I grabbed a lemon squeezer and gave it a shot 🤷‍♂️⁣

And it worked like a charm 🤩 I was honestly shocked that it worked as well as it did and this will now be the only way I do it from now on⁣

Although edible, the stalks are more fibrous and can be tough to eat, but you can use them for veggie broth or just throw them in the compost 👌⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

No more plastic seed trays 🙅🏼‍♂️⁣

People often doubt the effectiveness and structural integrity of soil block makers but they work well if you prep the soil and water correctly. ⁣
⁣
Seed starting soil is best (I only use and wetting it ahead of time is ideal for packing it in and aiding germination 🌱⁣
⁣
Once the block is ready, place your seed inside to the proper depth and put it in some kind of tray or waterproof surface (old baking sheets work well too) 🤓⁣

When watering, you can mist the block or bottom water. A heavy watering from above may break it apart, but as the seedling grows, the roots will keep it together 💪🏼⁣

My tomatoes are still growing 🤯

Tomatoes were the first crop is started growing back in 2014, and here are the three growing habits I recommend for massive tomatoes and giant yields:

Fertilizing twice a month. Tomatoes are heavy feeders and a healthy dose of espomaorganic tomato tone always does the trick. Will make a separate video on that later 🍅

Consistent, deep watering. My hoselinkusa hose reel is awesome for so many reasons, but watering my garden beds is number one. Tomatoes need a lot of water, and lugging around my 90ft hose was always a deterrent that ultimately slowed them down. With the retractable hose reel, watering and cleanup has never been easier 🚿

Pruning early and often! I don’t want my tomatoes focusing on foliage, so I cut back foliage on the bottom 1/3 of the plant along with anything growing inward. This encourages the plant to focus on flowering and fruiting and also increases air flow which can reduce the risk of disease 🦠

Apparently it’s been a rough year for tomato growers around the country, but you’d never know it here on our Michigan homestead 😜

Lazy lettuce 🥬⁣

Inspired by my buddy and his seed company I decided to plant a bunch of salad greens before the rainstorm 🌧️⁣
⁣
After sprinkling them throughout the bed, I gently turned the soil and let the rain do the rest. These will germinate in about 5-7 days and will reach full harvest in 30-45 days - just in time before the weather gets too warm and bolting begins 😬⁣

Gardening doesn’t always have to be exact. Nature is wild and it’s ok if your garden has a bit of wildness sprinkled in too 😜⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Poorly Plated Ep3: famous cauliflower 🤤⁣

I’m obsessed with ABCV’s whole roasted cauliflower and I did my best to recreate it at home. There’s something so satisfying about seeing that giant mound of golden brown deliciousness come out of the oven, but really this dish is all about the accouterments 🤌⁣

I laid this sucker down on a bed of delicata squash + pepper + garlic puree and then I drizzled lemon tahini dressing over the top before sprinkling pomegranate seeds and fresh mint from the garden (I always keep a pair of herb snips handy). I honestly think this could be my best planting job yet but I’ll let you be the judge 😉⁣
⁣
INGREDIENTS + RECIPE⁣
⁣
CAULIFLOWER (I eyeballed the spices but at least 1 tsp of each) ⁣
1 full head of Cauliflower⁣
1/3-1/2 cup EVOO⁣
Paprika, Cumin, Turmeric, Salt, Pepper⁣
ROAST at 400 until golden brown and tender (~35-45 min)⁣
⁣
PUREE⁣
2 Red Bell Peppers⁣
1 Delicata Squash⁣
5 cloves of Garlic⁣
3 TB of EVOO⁣
2 sprigs of Rosemary⁣
1 pinch of the same spices above⁣
ROAST at 400 until tender + slightly charred (~25-30 min)⁣
BLEND everything (except the rosemary) ⁣
SAUCE (again I eyeballed but you can adjust based on thickness)⁣
1/4 - 1/3 cup Lemon juice⁣
2 TB Tahini⁣
DRIZZLE over the top of the cauliflower⁣
⁣
GARNISH⁣
2 sprigs of Mint roughly chopped⁣
1/3 cup Pomegranate seeds⁣
SPRINKLE over the top⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Save these hydrangeas for fall planting ✅

Hydrangeas are actually one of the more versatile plant families. Yes, these big beautiful blooms require lots of water, but these three endlesssummerhydrangeas cultivars are absolutely fantastic for any garden space

The Pop Star (pink) and Twist N Shout (blue) lacecap hydrangeas are some of my absolute favorites. Totally different inflorescence pattern than the classic mopheads which allows for more pollinator activity 🐝

The Original (blue) and Summer Crush (pink) mophead varieties are classic Macrophylla hydrangeas that thrive in east facing light. And like all of these reblooming hydrangeas, they’ll keep putting out blooms if you keep them happy 😊

And I think my new favorite hydrangeas are these panicle hydrangeas. Berry White and Strawberry Sundae get BIG and unlike other hydrangeas, they can handle full sun, which makes them perfect for hedge areas. The cone shaped flowers start white and end up a beautiful dark pink 🤩

I adore this flagstone pathway and I built for our client in Paso Robles and the views are simply spectacular. It was a ton of work, but being able to wander along this path around the house was 100% worth it 💪🏼⁣
