Plant your 🍅 properly!⁣
⁣
Tomatoes are my favorite thing to grow in the garden and one of the first crops I ever experimented with. There are so many varieties and sizes that are perfect for any space, and there are a few specific techniques that will take your tomato game to the next level⁣
⁣
🍅 Start by removing nearly 2/3 of the stems and leaves below the crown with a sharp pair of snips (love my You want to train your plant to grow tall with a strong root system ⁣
⁣
🍅 Plant your tomato DEEP up to the crown of the plant. By removing the leaves and lateral stems and burying it deep in the soil, we are encouraging new roots to develop from the central stem. These roots grow from undifferentiated cells along the stem, NOT the little hairs (called trichomes)⁣
⁣
🍅 I’d also recommend removing any early stage flowers. Flowers are very much needed for pollination and fruiting, but you want the plant to focus more on foliage growth so it can produce more flowers later⁣
⁣
🍅 Tomatoes are heavy feeders, and I use tomato liquid fertilizer or tomato tone to keep them well fed through the season. These blends are higher in Phosphorous which promotes flowering and fruiting ⁣

When we think about humanitarian aid, we often think about responding to emergencies with food, water, shelter.

Personally I was most impressed by their efforts in the agricultural and energy spaces. All over Africa and Asia they have connected farmers with resources like crop insurance, financial services and climate smart farming information.

And in Ethiopia, they helped create a mini solar grid that gives a refugee community access to reliable, renewable energy

I left Corporate America to play in the dirt 😮⁣

Ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but I did leave my great corporate job to pursue Farmer Nick full time and launch my landscape design business. I was a “plantrepreneur” with a dream (and somewhat of a plan) and the first thing on my to do list was to protect myself and the business 🛡⁣

Tortoise gardening with 🐢 ⁣

For the next few months I’ll be taking care of George the Tortoise, an endangered California Desert Tortoise that lives with us in LA. George’s BIG personality is only outdone by his appetite, and he eats a colorful vegan diet consisting of dandelions, roses and his favorite, hibiscus flowers 🌺⁣
⁣
So naturally it was time for his very own hibiscus garden 😂⁣
⁣
After buying a few different varieties at my local nursery, I came home to plant them in his habitat. George deserves the very best so I made sure to use all of my Espoma products for this job: organic potting mix, perlite and even some tropical plant tone that is especially tailored to hibiscus flowers 😎⁣

Methane and Nitrous oxide and methane often get overshadowed by CO2 emissions in these conversations, and the clearing of native vegetation to grow animal feed is another huge problem that interrupts the carbon sequestration cycle ⭕️⁣

We can all agree on this 🤝

Michiganders are paying some of the highest utility rates in the country, while getting some of the poorest service. And in 2025, 16.7% of every DTE bill went toward shareholder profits (they had a $1.5 billion profit btw)

Meanwhile, utility companies have spent millions influencing Michigan elections. In 2022, more than 93% of Michigan lawmakers had accepted utility money.

Clearly this is a bipartisan issue, and the main question is:

Should the companies raising our utility rates also be funding the politicians who write the rules that regulate them?

Building a Dragon Fruit Trellis 🐲 ⁣

Before I even took my dragon fruit cuttings, I went to in Kauai to pick up a few tools. The machete was a new addition to my collection, and together with my trusty pruners, it made short work of this overgrown dragon fruit 🪓⁣
⁣
Dragon fruit is a vining epiphytic cactus that wants to grow vertically, so it needs a sturdy tree (or trellis) to reach its full potential. I had the team members at Home Depot cut 4ft center posts and then I returned home to build the crown 👑⁣
⁣
The dragon fruit cuttings need the center post to cling to as they grow up, but the crown allows them to hang off the sides. For this I used some scrap wood left over from a few other projects to make a 2x2 square with a piece connected in the middle. At first it wasn’t secured properly, but after a few more screws, I’m hopeful that it can hold the weight 🤞⁣

The trellis looks absolutely stunning in the garden and I can’t wait to see how big these cuttings get before they flower + fruit 🐉⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
