Keeping your home free from unwanted visitors like ants, spiders, and roaches is essential for a healthy living environment. Effective indoor pest control doesn't always mean harsh chemicals. By understanding common pests and employing smart prevention techniques, you can significantly reduce the chances of an infestation. This guide will walk you through practical tips to maintain a pest-free home.

Understanding Common Household Pests
Knowing what you're up against is the first step in successful indoor pest control. Many common household pests are attracted to food sources, water, and shelter. Some of the most frequent invaders include:

Ants: Often seeking sweet or greasy food crumbs.
Spiders: Looking for insects to eat and quiet places to build webs.
Cockroaches: Drawn to moisture and food, they can spread germs.
Rodents (Mice and Rats): Seeking warmth, food, and nesting materials.
Fruit Flies: Attracted to ripening fruit and decaying matter.
Learning the habits of these pests helps in creating targeted prevention strategies.

We are officially into the first week of April in the North Bay. The days are beautiful and warm, our gardens are thriving, and we are finally starting to leave the sliding glass doors open to let the evening breeze inside.
But as the weather shifts, so does the activity of the pests around the perimeter of your home.
Picture this: It is late at night. You walk out to the garage in your slippers to grab a bottle of water from the extra fridge, or you step out onto the patio to let the dog out one last time. You flip on the light, and suddenly, a large, dark, glossy insect scrambles frantically across the concrete to hide under a cardboard box.
If your immediate reaction is to tell yourself, "It’s just a waterbug," you are not alone. It is the most common lie homeowners tell themselves to avoid facing a harsh reality.
Those are not waterbugs. They are cockroaches. And right now, their populations are booming. Learn more..

It’s late March, and nesting season has officially begun. Here is why your solar panels and eaves are prime real estate, and how to protect your home before the flocks move in.

We are officially in the final stretch of March here in the North Bay. The heavy rains have subsided, the hills across Marin, Sonoma, and Solano counties are emerald green, and the wildlife is waking up. It is a beautiful time to enjoy nature—as long as nature isn’t trying to move into your attic.

As the temperatures rise, we enter the most critical part of the year for avian and wildlife activity: spring nesting season.

Right now, flocks of pigeons, swallows, and migrating bats are actively scouting the region for the safest, warmest places to raise their young. Unfortunately, the modern homes of Northern California, particularly those equipped with solar panels, offer the absolute perfect artificial habitats.

If you are hearing fluttering in the chimney, scratching in the attic, or seeing excessive bird droppings on your driveway this week, your home is likely being scouted. Here is what you need to know about the spring squatters and how to stop them.

The Solar Panel Sanctuary
California leads the nation in residential solar energy. While solar panels are fantastic for your electricity bill, they inadvertently create a five-star resort for pigeons.

The gap between your roof shingles and the solar panels provides incredible shelter. It is shaded from the hot afternoon sun, protected from the rain, and completely safe from natural predators like hawks and owls.

When pigeons decide to nest under your panels, they bring a host of severe problems:

Corrosive Damage: Pigeon guano (droppings) is highly acidic. Over time, it will literally eat through your roofing materials, leading to severe water leaks and costly repairs.

Decreased Efficiency: Debris and droppings on the panels block sunlight, reducing the energy output of your expensive solar system.

Parasites: Bird nests are notorious breeding grounds for bird mites, fleas, and ticks, which can easily find their way into your home’s ventilation system once the nest is abandoned.

The Bat Maternity Ward
While bats are incredibly beneficial for our local ecosystem (a single bat can eat thousands of mosquitoes a night!), you absolutely do not want them living inside your walls.

In late March and early April, female bats gather together to form "maternity colonies" to give birth to their pups. They do not need a large opening to get inside; a bat can squeeze through a gap as small as three-eighths of an inch. They typically enter through damaged ridge vents, loose fascia boards, or gaps around chimneys.

Once established in your attic, a bat colony will produce a massive amount of guano. Bat guano poses a significant respiratory health risk to humans due to the fungal spores that cause Histoplasmosis, making prompt removal essential.

Why "Exclusion" is the Only Solution
When homeowners realize they have birds or bats in the roof, their first instinct is often to look for repellents or try to remove the nests themselves.

This is a critical mistake. Many bird species and bats are heavily protected by California state and federal laws. It is illegal to harm them, use toxic chemicals against them, or disrupt active nests containing eggs or flightless young.

The only legal, humane, and permanent solution is Professional Exclusion.

Exclusion is the highly specialized process of installing physical barriers—like galvanized steel mesh, custom solar panel bird guards, and one-way exit cones—that allow the animals to leave safely but make it impossible for them to return.

Secure Your Roof for Spring
Don't wait until the nests are full of babies and the guano is piled high. Preventative exclusion is the most cost-effective way to protect your property.

At North Point Pest Solutions, we are the North Bay specialists in Bird, Pigeon, and Bat Exclusion. Whether you live in Benicia, Novato, Napa, San Rafael, or anywhere in Marin County, our licensed professionals use state-of-the-art materials to secure your roofline and solar panels for good.

Mid-March is a glorious time in the North Bay. The days are getting longer, the hills are vibrantly green, and the damp chill of winter is officially behind us. It’s the perfect weather to spend more time outside in your yard or take your dog for longer walks downtown.
Unfortunately, the exact same climate conditions that make you want to spend time outdoors are acting as a biological alarm clock for one of our most frustrating local pests: the cat flea (which, despite the name, happily targets dogs and humans, too).
If you’ve noticed your pet scratching a little more than usual this week, you might be at the very beginning of a spring flea explosion. Here is what is happening in your yard right now and how to stop it before it moves indoors.

The "Sleeping" Threat
To understand why fleas seem to appear out of nowhere in March, you have to understand their incredible survival skills.
During the cold, wet North Bay winter, flea development stalls.

After the heavy winter rains, the first warm, sunny days of late February trigger a terrifying sight: hundreds of flying insects emerging in your home. Here is what you need to know about termite swarms.

We have finally reached the end of February in the North Bay. The heavy, relentless winter storms are breaking, giving way to those gorgeous, sunny California days we’ve been waiting for. We are throwing open the windows, letting the fresh air in, and enjoying the warmth.

Unfortunately, we aren't the only ones reacting to the change in weather.

This specific climatic recipe—weeks of heavy soil saturation followed by a sudden spike in sunny, warm temperatures—is the exact biological trigger for one of the most stressful events a homeowner can witness: the spring termite swarm.

The late February sunshine has turned our hills a vibrant green, making it the perfect time for hiking. Unfortunately, it’s also the exact moment tick season explodes in our area.

It is late February in the North Bay. The heavy winter rains have moved on, leaving behind a spectacular reward: our iconic, rolling hills have transformed from their dormant brown into a vibrant, lush green. The mustard flowers are blooming in the vineyards, and the temperatures are finally inviting us back outside.

Whether you are hitting the trails in Marin, walking the dogs in Sonoma, or just enjoying your own backyard in Benicia, this is arguably the most beautiful time of year in Northern California.

However, this explosion of green brings a hidden, microscopic threat. As the grasses shoot up and the wildlife becomes more active, we are officially entering peak tick season in the North Bay.

The Hidden Hitchhiker: The Western Black-Legged Tick

While we have several species of ticks in California, the most concerning is the Western Black-legged Tick. This is the primary vector for Lyme disease in our region.

A common misconception is that ticks jump from trees or fly through the air to land on you. In reality, their hunting method is much more patient—and much creepier. It’s called "questing."

Ticks climb to the top of long blades of green grass or the edges of low-hanging shrubs. Learn More...
