What Do Footings Actually Do?
Short answer?
They hold up everything.
Every deck starts with footings installed below ground level. Their job is to support the weight of the structure and provide a stable foundation for years to come.
What many homeowners don't realize is that not every deck requires the same footing design.
The size of the deck, the layout, site conditions, and the amount of weight the deck is expected to support all play a role.
For example, a deck that's designed to support a hot tub will have different structural requirements than a simple backyard sitting area.
That's why footing design is an important part of the planning process—not something that gets decided after construction begins.
You may never see the footings once the project is finished.
But every step you take on the deck depends on them.
Sometimes the most important part of a deck is the part hidden below ground.
