A little support goes a long way! I used to think that if a plant needed a stake, it didn’t belong in my garden. But I’ve learned that a little support can make all the difference—especially for young plants. I like using half-circle stakes (commonly used for peonies) because they can support multiple stems at once. This hydrangea would be just fine without help, and in a few years it won’t need it—but for now, I’m happy to give it a boost.

This is an Invincibelle Ruby Smooth Hydrangea in part shade. It will eventually grow about 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

After heavy rains or storms, large blooms sometimes need a little support. The fix is simple: give them a gentle shake! These gorgeous Luminary Opalescence Phlox from Walters Gardens Proven Winners are one of my absolute favorites. After a couple of inches of hard rain, they looked a bit droopy, but a quick shake to lighten the blooms helped them bounce back. Less than an hour later, they were standing tall again.

Luminary Opalescence Phlox grow about 2 ½ feet tall and 2 feet wide, love part sun to full sun, and are hardy in zones 3–8. Mine are in full sun, now in their second full season, and last year they bloomed beautifully for weeks—I’m hoping for another long show this year!
