Peak cooling season is winding down. What did it reveal about your cooling tower?

The end of peak demand is a good time to take a closer look at the condition of your system.

A post-season cooling tower evaluation can help identify concerns involving:
🔍 Structural condition
⚙️ Mechanical components
đź’§ Water distribution
🌬️ Fill and airflow
🦺 Safety and access

The goal is not simply to find problems. It is to understand what needs attention, prioritize repairs, and build a plan before the cooling tower is operating under peak demand again.

Finding an issue now gives you time to plan what comes next.

Not every part of your cooling tower may be getting the same amount of water.

Poor water distribution can create performance differences across a cooling tower, even when the system appears to be operating normally.

Clogged, damaged, or misaligned nozzles can prevent water from being distributed evenly across the fill. Some areas may receive too much water, while others receive too little.

When that happens, the tower cannot use the full fill area as effectively for heat transfer.

Things worth checking include:
đź’§ Clogged or damaged spray nozzles
đź’§ Uneven spray patterns
đź’§ Distribution piping condition
đź’§ Areas of fill that appear unusually wet or dry

Uneven cooling may be the symptom. The distribution system could be where the problem starts.

Over the past three months, we've talked about evaluating repair quotes, recognizing rebuild opportunities, reducing project risk, and planning with confidence.

If there's one takeaway we'd encourage every facility team to remember, it's this:
Before approving a cooling tower repair or rebuild project, ask:
➡️ What was inspected?
➡️ What's included?
➡️ What's excluded?
➡️ What assumptions were made?
➡️ What could impact the final project cost?

Those conversations before work begins often determine how smoothly the project goes once it starts.

If you missed any part of our Quote Diligence™ Series, now is a great time to explore the resources we've shared, including our blogs and the free Cooling Tower Quote Diligence™ Checklist.

Because the goal isn't just a lower number.
The goal is the right number.

🎉 Celebrating 5 Years with Cherie Bunton!

Please join us in congratulating Cherie Bunton, Confined Space Attendant (CSA), on five years with OBR Cooling Towers!

One of Cherie's proudest accomplishments was fabricating her first three cooling tower cells at the LYB LPO site. As the only fabricator on site, it was an experience that strengthened her confidence and showed her what she was capable of accomplishing.

Today, in her role as a CSA, safety, communication, and teamwork remain essential. One lesson that has stayed with Cherie throughout her career is simple: clear communication helps keep everyone safe and working together.

But what does Cherie appreciate most about OBR? The people.

From the guidance of Dave Staat and Adrian Hill to the knowledge and support shared by Kevin Jackson, Shalisa Davis, Brittany Boose, and Brandon Call, Cherie is grateful for the teammates who have helped her learn and grow.

It's that family-like atmosphere and willingness to support one another that makes OBR special to her.

👏 Happy 5-year anniversary, Cherie! Thank you for your dedication, hard work, and commitment to the team. We're proud to celebrate this milestone with you!

Is your cooling tower delivering consistent performance across every cell?

Uneven cooling performance is often a sign that something within the tower is no longer operating as intended. The cause may not be one major failure, but several smaller issues affecting heat transfer, airflow, or water distribution.

Common areas to investigate include:

đź’§ Poor water distribution
Clogged or damaged nozzles and distribution issues can create uneven water flow and reduce effective heat transfer.

🌡️ Fouled or deteriorated fill
Scale, debris, biological growth, or damaged fill can interfere with air and water contact, limiting cooling performance.

🌬️ Airflow problems
Fan condition, blade pitch, mechanical wear, and other airflow restrictions can affect how consistently air moves through the tower.

⚙️ Mechanical issues
Wear or problems involving belts, bearings, driveshafts, gearboxes, motors, and other mechanical components can impact tower operation.

🧱 Scale, corrosion, and debris buildup
Buildup throughout the tower can restrict water flow and contribute to declining performance over time.
The key is finding the cause before performance problems develop into larger reliability concerns.

A comprehensive cooling tower inspection can evaluate the distribution system, fill, mechanical components, structural condition, and overall tower performance to help your team identify deficiencies and prioritize the right next steps.

Every Facility Has a Different Downtime Risk

No two facilities operate the same way.

Production schedules, redundancy, occupancy, operating hours, and business demands all influence the financial impact of an unexpected cooling tower failure.

That’s why estimating downtime risk isn’t about applying a generic number.

Our Cooling Tower Downtime Risk Calculator provides a personalized estimate based on your facility’s information, giving you a practical starting point for maintenance planning and budgeting.

Aging equipment doesn't always require replacement.

Many cooling towers can be rebuilt to restore performance, extend service life, and delay a major capital investment.

The key is understanding the tower's actual condition before making the decision.

A professional inspection can identify structural concerns, mechanical wear, thermal performance issues, and remaining asset life, giving your team the information needed to evaluate the best path forward.

Our latest blog explains six signs your cooling tower may be a strong candidate for rebuild instead of replacement.
