With plummeting temps in the forecast, we’ve heard some chatter about “exploding trees.” However, it’s not as explosive as it sounds. 🤯

Sudden cold snaps rarely cause trees to explode. What’s more common is frost cracking—when sunny winter days warm the bark, then rapid cooling causes it to shrink and tighten faster than the inner wood, creating a vertical crack. Trees with existing damage and those with thin bark are more prone to frost cracks.

Trees are resilient and usually heal well from this cracking. 💪 The cracks are permanent, but often a tree will seal the edges of the crack, leaving a thin vertical line in the bark.

🌳 Our plant experts do not recommend wrapping tree trunks to prevent frost cracks. Instead, help trees stay healthy enough to recover from frost cracks or other damage by watering them during the growing season and maintaining a layer of mulch over their roots.
