Second shift. New supervisor. Union skilled trades team. This picture was taken early in my leadership journey in 2002.
I had just transitioned from engineer to supervisor, leading a group of highly experienced union tradesmen. Many of them had more years in the plant than I had in the workforce.
I quickly learned something that no textbook teaches:
Leadership is not about authority.
It is about credibility.
You do not earn credibility with a title.
You earn it by listening.
By showing up.
By respecting the craft.
By protecting your team when it matters.
Leading skilled trades in a union environment taught me more about leadership than any classroom ever could. I learned:
• Trust is built shift by shift
• Technical knowledge earns respect
• Consistency matters more than charisma
• You lead people, not job descriptions
Those men in that photo helped shape the leader I am today.
If you are an engineer stepping into leadership for the first time, or a supervisor navigating union dynamics, understand this:

Several years ago, I completed my doctoral research on a topic that is still highly relevant today:
The impact of renewable energy growth on generation and distribution in regulated and deregulated states.

At the time, the grid was already experiencing transition.
Renewables were increasing.
Fossil generation was declining.
Market volatility was emerging.

The question was not whether renewable energy was beneficial.
The real engineering question was:
What are the measurable system impacts?
My research examined:
• Renewable pe*******on trends
• Net generation changes
• CO₂ emissions
• Cost per kWh
• Policy differences between regulated and deregulated states

One of the most important lessons from the data:
Energy policy and grid reliability must be evaluated through results — not ideology.

Change in generation mix affects cost structures, transmission constraints, reserve margins, and long term planning assumptions.

As engineers, we must look beyond headlines and ask:
What do the numbers actually show?

The grid does not respond to opinions.

It responds to physics, economics, and operational constraints.
Energy transformation requires disciplined analysis.

One of my favorite quotes is from Winston Churchill:

“However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.”
As engineers, we are wired to improve.
We optimize, refine, upgrade, and innovate.

But here is the uncomfortable TRUTH:
New does not automatically mean better. A process can look elegant.
A dashboard can look sophisticated.
A system can look cutting edge.

But if the results do not improve — what exactly did we accomplish?
CHANGE for the sake of CHANGE is NOT LEADERSHIP.
Change is measured against performance.

Before rolling out a new initiative, system, or strategy, ask:
• What problem are we actually solving?
• How will we measure success?
• What does “better” specifically mean?
• What are the unintended consequences?
The discipline is not in designing something beautiful.
The discipline is in evaluating whether it works and provides added value!

Engineering demands evidence.
Leadership demands accountability.
Ask yourself are we measuring results — or admiring strategy?
