We believe in honest advice, so here is the straight version of what you can handle yourself and what is worth a pro. Routine gutter cleaning on a single-story home, done safely from a stable ladder, is a reasonable do-it-yourself job. Clearing leaves and flushing downspouts a couple of times a year is good basic upkeep. Where the line gets crossed is anything involving installation, repair, or height. Forming and hanging seamless gutters takes on-site equipment and precise pitch, that is not a DIY project. Most older homes in our area have sectional gutters: short pieces joined together with seams and connectors along their length. Those seams are the weak point. Every one of them is a place that can loosen, separate, and leak, especially after years of expansion and contraction through our temperature swings, and a place for debris to catch. Seamless gutters solve that at the source. They are custom formed from a single continuous length of aluminum, cut to fit your home right on site, with no joints along the runs. The only connections are at the corners and downspouts. Here is something most Western New York homeowners do not realize: a lot of the winter roof damage we see traces straight back to a gutter problem that started in the fall. Gutters have one job, carry water safely away from the house. When they clog or sag, that water goes where it should not: down your siding, into your foundation, and behind your fascia. In our climate it gets worse in January, when clogged gutters trap snowmelt that refreezes into ice dams along the eaves and backs water up under your shingles.
