Pictures don’t do this one justice, but just when you think you might not see another untouched woodlot again, one pops up… Nothing has been done on this one since it was abandoned as pasture probably over 100 years ago. Hemlock, red oak, white pine and spruce dominate the species composition and averages over 40 cords per acre! Time to get some daylight in there and try to get some pine started!

Sometimes the views and locations we work are pretty great and yesterday morning was just that! My assistant (my son) and I worked on laying out and tallying a shoreland zone project on Peabody Pond in Bridgton for a current client who is putting up a new camp. With restricted sunlight for solar panels to power this off grid camp and wanting a better view of the pond, we laid out grids, tallied trees and marked certain ones for removal to town standards. It’s a time consuming process, but worth it in the end if you’re a waterfront landowner!

Checked on CTL job number two as well yesterday to check on progress. Spacing some nice pine seed trees on this one while also grabbing out some of the low grade hardwood in the midstory. What will be left is a great pine seed source in the overstory, a midstory of well established red oak and white pine and an understory of established/newly established white pine seedlings from this years seed drop. All looks great and glad to have the opportunity to get some sawdust on the ground on this one!

Processing away on one of our jobs in Oxford! This one is heavy to hardwood and we’re taking out a lot of low grade to release younger crop trees as well as spacing mature oak and maple where it should be. Growing on a hillside, this hardwood is very tall and should add up very well!

Stopped in to check out a lot in Phillips this afternoon on the way northward for work tomorrow and a weekend at camp once the week is finally wrapped up. There’s a good mix of pulp as well as sawlogs on this one, with some pretty steep ground! A harvest here ought to be doable with some good layout and the right operator though!

Got in the woods today to check in on one of the two CTL crews that got started yesterday. Bunching and processing is already well underway and we’re giving these pine seed trees some gaps to hopefully regenerate back to pine! With the scarification from equipment as well as being a seed year, chances are high that pine will take off in the trails!

Two bunchers got started this morning for us and luckily for logistics both jobs are in Oxford! Each of the sawheads were brushing out truck roads to get in to landings, followed up by starting to get things thinned out. Full throttle from here forward!

Solid day of layout getting some set buffers/block line, property lines as well as primary trails flagged out getting ready for one of two harvests we have planned in Oxford! We’re not quite where we were hoping to be at, at this point of summer with completed jobs, but looking to play a little catch up over the next month or two!

Friday check in on our road project and things are looking good! 30 years of woods road building experience that the operator has will do that! Laying out and building roads into new areas is likely my favorite thing to do in the woods, though not something I get to do on a regular basis. Once it settles out, a few thousand cords will be headed out on trucks to mills!

Busy day on the landing on our job in Denmark skidding and slashing wood! It’s a good mix of everything on this one and even found some nice fat spruce that was ready to be thinned out!
