We hear this one constantly. The stain isn't the problem. It's a sign moisture got into your drywall, and unless you fixed the source, painting over it is a bandage on a leaking pipe.

When a Melrose homeowner noticed a musty smell coming from their kitchen, they figured it was just an older home being an older home. But when they pulled back a loose section of wall near the sink, they found something much worse - mold had been silently spreading behind the cabinets for months.
