Impact windows 101, the honest version. An impact window is laminated glass in a reinforced frame, made to resist windborne debris. It is always on. There are no panels to put up and no tracks to maintain. Hurricane shutters protect an opening only when you close them, but they usually cost less per opening. Neither answer is right for every home. It depends on your openings, your budget and how the house is used. One thing is not optional in Miami-Dade and Broward. How accordion shutters actually work. Accordion shutters fold flat against the wall all year, then slide along a track and lock in the middle when a storm is coming. The parts that fail are almost always the small ones. Wheels wear down. Tracks fill with salt and dirt. Locks stiffen up. When that happens the shutter sticks halfway, usually the first time you really need it. The fix is simple when it is done early in the season.
