NIPSCO Customers,

As restoration efforts continue following the recent severe weather, some customers may be unable to have power restored immediately because repairs are needed to customer-owned electrical equipment attached to their home or business.

Many customers have experienced damage to their weatherhead, which is the metal cap and service entrance equipment where NIPSCO's electric service wires connect to your property. Storm damage can pull, bend, or otherwise damage this equipment, making it unsafe to reconnect electric service until the repairs are completed.

What should you do if your weatherhead is damaged?

If your weatherhead or related service equipment has been damaged:

Contact a licensed electrician to inspect and repair the damage.
Obtain any required local inspection approvals after repairs are completed. Local requirements may vary by municipality.
Contact NIPSCO after repairs and inspections are complete to safely reconnect electric service.
Why can't NIPSCO make these repairs?

The weatherhead, associated wiring, and meter base are customer-owned equipment. Under Indiana utility regulations and electrical codes, repairs to this equipment must be completed by a licensed electrician before service can be restored. NIPSCO crews are only authorized to repair utility-owned infrastructure and cannot perform repairs to customer-owned electrical equipment.

Signs your weatherhead may be damaged.

You may have weatherhead damage if you notice:

Service equipment pulled away from the home
Bent or broken mast piping
A damaged meter socket or service attachment point
Service wires hanging unusually low
Safety Reminder:

Never attempt to repair or handle damaged electrical equipment yourself. If you suspect damage, stay clear of the equipment and contact a licensed electrician.

For additional information about service line and weatherhead damage, please visit NIPSCO Service Line Damage Information.

We understand that this additional step can be frustrating for customers waiting for power to be restored. Our crews will reconnect service as safely and quickly as possible once repairs have been completed and approved.

The diagram below shows which components of an overhead electric service are maintained by NIPSCO and which are the customer's responsibility. Understanding these roles can help streamline repairs after storm damage.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

: What's the difference between 3-pronged and 2-pronged plugs?

The primary difference is the third prong, which acts as a dedicated grounding path to safely redirect excess electricity and protect your family from shocks or potential fires. While two-pronged outlets were common in older homes, upgrading to grounded three-pronged outlets is a stellar safety move for modern appliances.
