When you do your last cut of the season, do you drop the deck a notch or leave it right where it's been all summer?

The case for going a little shorter: on cool-season lawns, slightly shorter grass is less likely to flop over and mat down under leaves and snow, which can help with snow mold come spring.

The case against: go too short and you stress the plant right before winter. Never scalp it.

Hot take: you probably don't need to rake most of your leaves. 🍂

When there's just a light layer, a pass with the mower chops them into small bits that settle between the grass blades, break down over the winter, and feed the soil. Less bagging, less hauling, free organic matter.

The exception: thick, wet piles that mat down and smother the grass. Those still need to go.
