Just a few of the wonderful DIY or “I know a guy cheaper” installations we see under and around many of the private piers and marinas of the Chesapeake bay and rivers

Every year Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) claims several new victims. As more people start taking to their boats and boat docks, it's important to remind you of the hidden dangers, so you can do your part to help keep families safe around lakes and marinas.

James Shafer and Capt. David Rifkin began a research journey to discover how electricity in the water can incapacitate and kill. Ground fault leakage into the water causes electrical gradients to form. If a person gets in one of these gradients, a current will flow through the body. Currents as low as 10ma can cause paralysis of limbs preventing a person from staying afloat, resulting in drowning. Higher currents can cause the heart to fail directly resulting in death. There is no warning of this situation, and there is no post-mortem indication available absent any burn marks associated with direct contact with an electrical source. There are likely hundreds of deaths and injuries associated with electrical leakage into the water that aren’t reported as such.

It also happens in swimming pools and spas but since they are designed for swimming, they have more extensive protection equipment installed, and stricter grounding and bonding requirements.

ESD can also be caused by submerged irrigation pumps. Sadly, many of these are purchased at home stores and installed by homeowners using extension cords. And people are swimming right over them, within a few feet!
Bottom line: DON’T SWIM WITHIN ABOUT 50 YARDS OF ANY KNOWN ELECTRICAL SOURCES. Marinas are required to have an annual inspection of the electrical system to include ALL connections, but inspections are few and far between.

It’s boating season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here at SC Electrical, that has a slightly different meaning; another summer full of docks to wire.

Thank you Walt Granger III from Premium Site Services for the digging assistance. He’s the best! He even installed the plumbers pipe. Could hardly tell he was there after he finished up.

We are looking forward to another busy season on the water. We’d love to wire your dock! Give us a call.
