If you have ever looked at attic ductwork and wondered what the gray sealant is, that is mastic.

It seals the joints so conditioned air stays in the duct instead of leaking into the attic.

Old ductwork can also get crushed, disconnected or damaged over time. If rooms are hard to heat or cool, the ductwork is worth checking.

Measure the room. Cut the opening. Crawl through the attic. Run the insulated duct. Tie it in and seal it. Finish with the grille.

Little River ShrimpFest is this weekend. 🍤

Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10–11, from 9 to 5 on the Historic Little River Waterfront.

There will be more than 200 vendors, two stages of live music, festival food and all the waterfront restaurants right there too.

Admission is $10 per person, per day. Kids 12 and under get in free.

If you have a must-order ShrimpFest food, we need notes.

If the space heater is coming out this week, give it some room.

Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Shut it off when you leave the room or go to bed.

That’s it. Boring advice, but worth remembering once the nights start cooling down.

Before that clean grille went in, the crew measured the room, covered the furniture, cut the opening, ran insulated duct through the attic, tied it into the system and sealed everything up.

Closing the vent in a room you barely use sounds like it should save money. Usually it does the opposite.

Your HVAC system is designed to move a certain amount of air. Closing several vents can raise pressure in the ductwork and make comfort problems worse.

Keep the vents open and make sure furniture is not blocking them.

🏖️ Shutting the place down for the season? A week away and five months away are not the same problem.

The thermostat part you probably know: leave it running warm, somewhere around 80 to 85, so it still cycles and keeps pulling moisture out. Same as any vacation.

But when it’s months…

The water heater. It's going to hold and reheat 50 gallons all fall for absolutely nobody. Most have a vacation setting, and this is exactly what it's for! 💧

The main shut-off. Know where it is, and think hard about closing it. A supply line letting go in an occupied house is a mess you catch in an hour, but in a house nobody walks into until March, it's an unfortunate renovation.

Humidity is the thread through all of it. What wrecks a beach house down here is usually not the dramatic thing but the slow thing.

Lock the door, check the water, then go enjoy not cleaning sand out of the car for a while. 🔑
