As a chimney sweep, I see this more often than I like. We have more chimney fires at Christmas and after because folks burn their Christmas wrap and Christmas trees in their fireplace.
It's not a good idea at all! Not even to cut a Christmas tree up into smaller pieces!
Your putting your family at risk, as well as your home being burned down by doing this. Your lucky if that's all you end up with, is a non working fireplace! Burning Christmas trees (even cut up) and Christmas wrap in your chimney is putting your fireplace/ chimney at risk for thermal shock = cracked flue tiles = a non working fireplace/chimney = roughly 6 grand to have restored.
Also, insurance companies have loop holes. even if you have fire insurance, it's more than likely not useful, unless you have provided your insurance company with a invoice, showing you have had an annual inspection and swept if needed.

Also, just because your chimney is clean/ or recently swept...doesn't mean it's still ok to burn Christmas tree or Christmas wrap!!
Trust me! ... you will have more problems than creosote/hard glaze deposits
