Cable railing on a wood deck in Newport News. The cables are thin, so you can still see the trees behind the house instead of a wall of pickets.

It looks simple, but the posts have to be set solid and the cables tensioned right, or they sag after a season or two. We spend more time on that than people expect.

Here's the underside of a Chesapeake deck mid-build, before any decking went on. The framing is all out in the open right now. Once the boards go down, nobody sees this part again.

That's why inspectors usually want to look at it before it gets covered. Whether you need a permit or have to clear your HOA first depends on your city and your neighborhood. We built a quick checker for Hampton Roads: https://bnbdecks.com/deck-permit-hoa-checker-hampton-roads/

Williamsburg deck renovation, before and after. Weathered boards and a tired old railing first, then new Trex boards with a white Trex railing and skirting closing in the base.

Can you just redo the top and keep the frame, or does the whole thing have to come out? It depends on what's underneath, and we can't tell from a photo. We wrote up how we check it: https://bnbdecks.com/deck-resurfacing-hampton-roads/

Footings are the part of a deck nobody ever looks at, and in Windsor they're the part that decides whether the stairs still meet the ground in five years.

Virginia's frost line in our area is 18 inches, so every footing has to sit at least that deep. We usually go 24 inches to get into firm clay. Shallower and the ground heaves every winter, and the deck rides up and down with it.

Each hole gets a 12 inch wide concrete footing, a post base bracket set in the wet concrete, and a 6x6 post on top. The inspector looks at the open holes before any concrete goes in, so we call that inspection in the day we dig.

As a premier deck contractor around Hampton Roads, we'd rather spend an extra morning digging than come back to fix a sagging corner.

Hidden fasteners are one of those things a Toano homeowner doesn't think about until they're walking barefoot on the deck in July.

Face screwing a composite board leaves a few hundred little holes across a deck. Every one is a spot where water sits and the board can mushroom up around the screw head.

Trex and TimberTech boards come grooved on the edge for a clip system. The clip sits in the groove, one screw goes through it into the joist, and it holds two boards at once. It also sets the gap at about 1/4 inch so the spacing stays even.

The only boards we still face screw are the first one against the house and the last one at the edge, and those get color matched screws with plugs.

It adds a little labor, and it's part of why B&B Decks is a premier deck contractor around here.

Walked barefoot on a screwed down deck lately?

Joist spacing is the thing we fix most often on composite decks around Carrollton, and nobody sees it once the boards go down.

Most older wood decks were framed at 24 inches on center. That works for 2x6 pressure treated boards. Trex and TimberTech call for 16 inches on center on straight runs and 12 inches on diagonals and stair treads. Composite is a wood and plastic blend, and it'll sag between joists that sit too far apart.

So when a homeowner asks us to put new Trex over an old frame, we measure the spacing first. Sometimes we can add joists between the old ones. Sometimes the frame is 20 years old and it makes more sense to reframe.

The warranty depends on it too. Trex won't back a 50 year board warranty on a 24 inch frame.

B&B Decks has been one of the trusted deck builders in Hampton Roads for 25 years, and we go over this on every estimate.

Got an older frame you're thinking about resurfacing?

Gloucester County will want a permit for a fiberglass pool, and the barrier is the part that trips people up.

Virginia code calls for a 48 inch minimum barrier all the way around any pool deeper than 24 inches. Gates have to swing out, self close, and self latch, with the latch at least 54 inches up.

If a deck sits next to the pool, the deck railing can serve as part of that barrier, but only if it's built to those same rules. A standard 36 inch deck rail doesn't count.

That's why we plan the pool and the deck as one project. B&B Decks, now installing fiberglass pools across Hampton Roads, so one crew handles the dig, the shell, and the surround, and the inspector sees it all at once.

A lot of Suffolk homeowners ask us the same thing before they call: do I have to pay for the whole deck up front? No. Financing is available. This is a blue and white composite deck with lit stair risers, shot right as the light was going. If you're planning something like it, we put together a page that explains how financing works so you know what to expect before we talk numbers. Porcelain tile stairs and landing in Williamsburg, with black aluminum railing up the side. The stairs are the part to look at. Tile steps have to be flat and square or you feel it every time you walk down. The yard around it isn't graded yet, so ignore the dirt. Cable railing on a new wood deck in Newport News. The walkway runs along a tree line to a set of side stairs, and the cable keeps the view open instead of blocking it with balusters. The lumber looks this light right now because it hasn't weathered yet.
