Food, games, classes, crafts, and a whole lot of fun!

Join us in the backlot area of the 757 Creative ReUse Center for a day of entertainment to welcome autumn :) Please RSVP by clicking the luma link, or the link can be found in our bio :)

​The event schedule has been finalized and can be found below:

9:00 AM: Event start time

​9:15 AM - 10:00 AM: Planting Fruit Bearing Trees and Shrubs workshop by Community Farmers

​10:15 AM -11:00 AM: Vermicomposting workshop by Coastal Castings

​11:30 AM - 12:15 PM: Container Gardening workshop by Norfolk Master Gardeners

​12:30 PM - 1:15 PM: DIY Turf Conversion workshop by the Elizabeth River Project

​2:00 PM: Event end time

​Feel free to use the time in between workshops to enjoy freshly baked goods made of produce from local gardens along with beverages, enjoy crafts, and play fall games.

​The baked goods consist of:

​-Tromboncino bread (locally sourced ingredients)

​-fig muffins (locally sourced ingredients)

​-vegan and gluten free banana chocolate chip muffins (vegan, gluten free, nut free, soy free)

​In the spirit of sustainability, it would be highly appreciated if you are able to please bring your own drink container. We will have backups available just in case. The available beverages are:

​-fresh coffee

​-gatorade

-​water

​The crafts include:

-​creating a Pinecone Birdseed Feeder

​-crafting an Autumn Hanger

​-assembling Earth Jewelry - bracelets and necklace made from things found in nature

​The ongoing games encompass:

​-Tik Tak Toe: played with veggies made on a board of sticks

​-Stack The Apples: whoever can stack the apples fastest without them falling down wins

​-Red Light Green Light

​-Simon Says

​A few things to note:

​-It is highly advised that all prepare for a light rain. Waterproof shoes, rain jackets, ponchos and umbrellas are your friend.

​-Due to the event location, only street parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

​A special thank you to our community partners: 757 Creative ReUse Center for providing the space and Elizabeth River Project for donating the fruit bearing trees and shrubs, creating the landscape design, and supplying volunteers.

It was planting day at the Weyanoke Bird and Wildflower Sanctuary today. Some plant sale purchases, some plant sale leftovers, and some Arbor Day leftover trees found a new home in areas that we have cleared of invasives. Both purple and white asters are in bloom and the long lasting purple blooms of the Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum) are scattered throughout the garden. We witnessed a squirrel and a hawk in battle; one fighting to live and the other fighting for a meal. Two other hawks swooped through the trees, drawn by the commotion. The shimmering wings of a dead cicada caught our eye lying against the flat browns of decaying brush. Thanks Ben and Vickie!

Fall approaches, this year's flowers fade . . . the perfect time to be thinking about planting bulbs for blooms next spring!

The garden at The Virginia Zoo looks amazing despite all the rain and storm warnings. Today we had our first fall harvest. We sent 13 lbs of kale, swiss chard, collards, green onions, and vining okra to the food bank.

Big thanks for to Susan and Chris for braving the winds and light sprinkle of rain. We will water the garden as needed to keep our seedlings moving along.

Did you know that the aldabra tortoises across the garden are about 30 years old!!!
