Our design for the Virginia African American Cultural Center follows the framework of Co, Ed, Cu, representing community, education, and culture. The proposal considers how architecture can interpret cultural traditions through form and spatial experience.

The Drum, an elliptical gathering space informed by the djembe and the Liberian Palava hut, gives physical expression to this idea. Its circular form reflects traditions of communal gathering and oral storytelling, establishing a focal point from which the Center extends outward. The surrounding landscape creates further opportunities for community use.

The design received a 2026 AIA Virginia Design Award in the Unbuilt category.

It’s move-in season. Across campuses, students are unpacking boxes, meeting roommates, and settling into the places they’ll call home this year.

For students, it’s the start of a new experience. For universities, housing requires looking well beyond the year ahead, with a master plan that considers what students need from residential life today while guiding how the housing system develops over time.

We’re looking back at some of the residential communities we’ve helped shape, alongside five questions institutions should consider when planning for the future of campus housing. More at link in bio.

Hello, Chicago!

Hanbury’s ninth studio opens this month, formalizing more than a decade of Midwest work and giving us a permanent home in one of the country’s most important design cities.

Leading the studio is Andrew Balster, who joins as Principal, Design Strategy Director, and User Experience Market Leader.

Andrew has shaped Chicago design and design education for nearly two decades, most recently leading the Chicago office of an international design firm, and earlier as director of the Virginia Tech Chicago Studio, where he taught members of our own design leadership.

Located between the Sports District and the ViBe Creative District in Virginia Beach, the design for the 19th Street Mixed-Use Garage treats essential parking infrastructure as a canvas for activity.

The project provides approximately 1,000 new parking spaces while restoring connectivity across the site through the extension of Parks Avenue. Retail and restaurants activate the ground plane along 19th Street, while planned public art integrated into the facade extends the creative identity of the ViBe District across the scale of both the pedestrian and the building.

In collaboration with The Runnymede Corporation, W.M. Jordan, and Kimley Horn.

Set against the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the Lower Campus Residence Halls replace two aging towers with three appropriately-scaled buildings organized around a new central quad.

Home to more than 900 first-year students, the project moves away from an institutional, vertical model toward a community-scaled approach. Each building is organized around a central bar of porches, lounges, kitchens, and study spaces that pulls residents toward each other and the landscape.

Mass timber, regionally-sourced materials, and reclaimed elements from the original towers shape a lower-carbon approach, reframing the lower edge of campus as a welcoming, lodge-like arrival point.

Honored with a 2026 Citation Award from AIA South Carolina.

We have completed year seven of reporting on the Commitment. Across more than five million square feet of tracked space, our projects are averaging a 37% reduction above baseline energy use intensity, with two projects achieving above the current 90% performance threshold.

Earth Day is a fitting moment for reflection. As we build out our 2030 portfolio, we’re finding new opportunities for improvement across project teams, market sectors, and geographic regions. Every project, both the obstacles and the success stories, contribute to informing earlier, better-calibrated design decisions across our practice.

Historic preservation begins with a simple premise: the most sustainable building is one that already exists. It evaluates what can remain, then adapts it to perform in the present.

Principal Greg Rutledge approaches preservation through material understanding and construction logic, developed over four decades of work, uncovering and retaining the evidence embedded in each place.

Each project works within the constraints of the existing structure, introducing targeted refinements that support continued use while keeping its history legible.
