⚓ HOW DOES THE DEFOURON SYSTEM WORK?

Ever wondered how a ship protects its seawater piping from marine fouling and corrosion?

The DEFOURON system uses electrolysis to treat seawater before it enters the vessel's seawater/cooling system.

🔹 1. SEAWATER INTAKE
Seawater from the sea chest passes through the flow-adjusting valve and flow meter before entering the electrolytic cell.

🔹 2. DC ELECTROLYSIS
A DC rectifier supplies electrical current to the electrolytic cell containing copper (Cu) and aluminum-alloy (Al) electrodes.

🔹 3. COPPER IONS ARE GENERATED
At the copper electrode:

Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻

The generated copper ions are carried with the seawater and provide an anti-fouling effect, helping control the attachment of marine organisms.

🔹 4. ALUMINUM COMPOUNDS ARE FORMED
Aluminum undergoes an electrochemical reaction, while the cathodic reaction produces hydroxide ions:

H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂ + 2OH⁻

These reactions contribute to the formation of aluminum hydroxide compounds:

Al³⁺ + 3OH⁻ → Al(OH)₃

These compounds contribute to corrosion protection of the internal seawater piping surfaces.

🔹 5. TREATED SEAWATER ENTERS THE SYSTEM
The treated seawater flows into the vessel's seawater/cooling piping, providing combined anti-fouling and anti-corrosion protection.

⚡ THE BASIC PRINCIPLE:

SEAWATER + DC ELECTROLYSIS → Cu IONS + Al COMPOUNDS → PIPING PROTECTION

This is a great example of how electrical engineering and electrochemistry are applied in marine engineering.

🚢 How Does a Marine Fresh Water Generator Work? 💧

Ever wondered how a ship turns seawater into fresh water?

A Fresh Water Generator (FWG) uses a simple but clever principle: vacuum + waste heat.

🔥 1. Waste heat as the energy source
Hot main engine jacket cooling water passes through the FWG heater. In this example, it enters at about 90°C.

🌊 2. Vacuum lowers the boiling point
The ejector creates a deep vacuum of around −0.085 MPa. Because of the low pressure, seawater can ev***rate at only about 56°C instead of needing atmospheric boiling temperature.

💨 3. Seawater becomes v***r
The heated feed water ev***rates. The remaining concentrated seawater becomes brine and is discharged overboard.

🧹 4. Salt droplets are removed
A deflector and mesh separator prevent seawater droplets from being carried with the v***r.

❄️ 5. V***r becomes fresh water
The clean v***r enters the condenser, where it is cooled by seawater and converted into distillate.

🧪 6. Salinity is checked
A salinity cell continuously monitors the produced water. If the salinity is too high, the water is automatically diverted instead of being sent to the freshwater tank.

📊 Example from the Sasakura KM20:

- Feed water: 2,800 kg/h
- Brine: 1,967 kg/h
- Distillate: ≈833 kg/h
- Production: 20 tonnes/day
- Ev***ration temperature: 56.1°C
- Vacuum: −0.085 MPa

👉 The key lesson: The FWG doesn't need a separate boiler. It recovers waste heat from the main engine and uses vacuum distillation to produce freshwater.

A high-frequency AC current flows through the copper coil, creating an alternating magnetic field. That changing magnetic field induces eddy currents inside the iron rod, and because the metal has electrical resistance, those currents generate heat through I²R losses. 🔥

🚢 COLREGs Rule 21 & Rule 22 – Understanding Sidelights ⚓

Every seafarer should know the purpose and meaning of sidelights. Correct identification of navigation lights helps prevent collisions and ensures safe navigation at sea.

🔴 Rule 21(b) – Sidelights
A sidelight is a navigation light displayed on both sides of a vessel:
• Red – Port (left) side
• Green – Starboard (right) side

Each sidelight displays an unbroken arc of 112.5°, visible from right ahead to 22.5° abaft the beam on its respective side.

For vessels less than 20 meters in length, the port and starboard sidelights may be combined into a single bi-color lantern mounted on the vessel's fore-and-aft centerline.

📏 Rule 22 – Minimum Visibility Range
• Vessels 50 meters and above: 3 nautical miles
• Vessels 12 meters to less than 50 meters: 2 nautical miles
• Vessels less than 12 meters: 1 nautical mile

⚓ How to Interpret Navigation Lights
🔴 Red light only – You are viewing the vessel's port side.
🟢 Green light only – You are viewing the vessel's starboard side.
🔴🟢 Red and green lights together – The vessel is approaching head-on or nearly head-on.
⚪ White sternlight only – You are overtaking the vessel.

💡 Understanding navigation lights is one of the most important skills for bridge officers, cadets, ETOs, and all seafarers. Proper interpretation allows you to identify whether a situation is head-on, crossing, or overtaking, helping you apply the correct COLREGs action and avoid collisions at sea.
