🔧🚽 Toilet 101: Is It a DIY Fix or Time to Call a Pro?

Not every toilet problem requires professional help—but knowing when to stop troubleshooting can save you from turning a small issue into a bigger one.

A toilet that’s running? 👀 If you can clearly identify a simple chain or flapper issue, it may be something you can address yourself.

But if you’re dealing with water around the base, recurring clogs, or a toilet that rocks, it’s a good idea to have a professional take a look.

When in doubt, don’t guess—get it checked out.

💦🚽 Toilet 101: Where Does All That Toilet Water Go?

Ever wondered what actually happens after you flush?

That water—and everything you flush with it—travels through your home’s plumbing and into either a sewer system or septic system, where wastewater continues through the appropriate treatment process.

In other words, what goes down the toilet doesn’t simply disappear. 👀

That’s why what you flush matters. As a general rule, your toilet should be reserved for human waste and toilet paper. Items like wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, and other household items can cause problems because they aren't designed to break down and move through plumbing systems the same way toilet paper does.

Think before you flush! 🚽💧 Your plumbing—and the system beyond it—will thank you.

🚨🚽 Toilet 101: Is Your Toilet Trying to Tell You Something?

Not every toilet leak leaves a puddle on the floor. Some leaks happen quietly inside the tank or bowl, wasting water without making it obvious that anything is wrong.

A toilet that runs when no one has flushed, refills on its own, or causes an unexpected increase in your water bill could be giving you a clue. 👀💧

Catching a leak early can help reduce water waste and prevent a small plumbing issue from becoming a bigger one.

💧🚽 Toilet 101: How Much Water Does Your Toilet Use?

Your toilet is one of the most frequently used fixtures in your home, so the amount of water it uses with each flush can add up over time.

Toilet design and efficiency have changed significantly over the years, which means an older toilet may use considerably more water than a newer, more efficient model.

Curious how efficient your toilet is? Check the toilet for model information or look for a WaterSense label to learn more about its water use. 💧

Small details can make a big difference when it comes to water use.

🚽🔍 Toilet 101: Let’s Take a Look Inside the Tank!

You probably don’t think much about what happens inside your toilet tank every time you flush, but there’s actually a simple sequence of parts working together.

Here’s the basic process:

🖐️ Push the handle → the chain lifts the flapper
💧 The flapper opens → water flows from the tank into the bowl
⬇️ The tank empties → the flapper closes again
🔄 The fill valve refills the tank → the toilet is ready for its next flush

When everything is working properly, this process happens almost automatically. But a worn flapper, faulty fill valve, loose chain, or another small issue can interrupt the sequence and lead to running, leaking, or incomplete flushing.

Knowing the basics of your toilet’s anatomy can make it easier to recognize when something isn’t working quite right. 🛠️

Consider this your first lesson in Toilet 101! 📚🚽
