After sitting on the this for a week, a little afraid of attempting color, my drawing from Hamilton County Artists' Association Open Studio last week is complete with an experimental watercolor background mimicking shapes and colors from the painting that was behind our model. Looking forward to having this model back for our Open Studio sessions!

Go big… or go home quietly. 🤫

It’s been a few years since I’ve worked at this scale, and I forgot how much I love the presence of a larger piece taking over the space. There’s something a little bold and a little playful about her already with just a few lines.

(That 5x7” panel is there for perspective. She’s not messing around.)

A little progression of last night’s Open Studio session at the Hamilton County Artists' Association. We had an absolutely gorgeous model in front of an absolutely gorgeous painting by Heather Ward Miles. I think I’m going to add a watercolor background that mimics shapes and colors from the painting, but for today I’m going to let this drawing rest. Such a fun group to create with!

A little creative side-journey this weekend 🌿✨

I’m experimenting with pretty handmade papers, dried and pressed flowers, and turning them into tiny wearable pieces. A few will get some hand-painted details…and of course, a touch of gold leaf. 😉

Stay tuned. These little beauties are just getting started!

(And the behind-the-scenes reality.)

"My portrait work captures quiet moments shaped by light and shadow. I focus on mood and feeling, using dramatic contrast to hold a sense of stillness and reflection. Each piece is meant to feel like a pause in time."

I had the pleasure of taking Collage Pet Portrait class at the Art Center at the end of January, and I finally finished my portrait of the best boy, Sal, last night. 🐾💛

Most of my collage experience has happened in my classroom, so this was my first time working with the medium in a truly intentional way. Using torn magazine pages forced me to slow down and really think about shape, planes, color, and texture, and I loved that challenge.

Do I 1000% regret using a satin varnish that darkened some of the lighter values I was hoping to preserve? Yes. 😅 Lesson learned!

But that’s part of the process. Always try something new because you never know what you’ll learn or how it will shape your own work. 🎨✨

If you ever have the opportunity to try Gelli printing, go for it! It’s playful, fun, and low-cost. You can’t always plan the results, which frees you to experiment and take risks. One pull of the print might look like a disaster, but the next layer on top turns it into a textural wonder. I can’t wait to add some doodles and drawings to these prints later!

Thanks, Jessica Green Artwork for teaching a Gelli printing class at the Hamilton County Artists' Association art center today! So much fun!
