The Benefits of Aeration and Overseeding

Aeration and overseeding are two of the best maintenance services available to help improve the appearance, health, and thickness of any lawn.

What is Lawn Aeration?

Aeration involves using a coring aerator, which removes a few inches of soil plugs to help reduce compaction in the lawn. This will allow for improved access to oxygen, nutrients, and water to reach the roots more easily. This promotes root growth and helps maintain your lawn during stressful heat, drought, and high traffic.

What is Overseeding?

Overseeding is a process in which new grass seed is added across an existing lawn to help fill in thinning or bald areas, increase thickness of grass, and organically suppress w**ds and improve turf density. When aeration and overseeding are completed together, the seed has better contact with the soil, which can improve germination and help establish healthier new grass.

For cool-season lawns in Indiana, fall is typically one of the best times to aerate and overseed because cooler temperatures and improved soil moisture create ideal growing conditions.

At Holmes Lawn and Landscape, we recommend these services for grass that has thinned and is experiencing compaction, patchiness, or simply needs a boost. With proper watering and care afterward, it can make a major difference in the overall health and appearance of your lawn.

How to Design a Landscape That Looks Good Year-Round

The goal of a good landscape is for the house to look appealing throughout every season, not just spring and summer. With proper planning and plant selection, the landscape itself will always be attractive with color, form, and dimension throughout the year.

Always begin using evergreen plants such as boxwoods, arborvitaes, or junipers as they add dimension to the landscape and create beds which appear less bare in winter.

Next, choose plants that bloom at different times. Spring flowers, summer hydrangeas, fall-blooming perennials, and ornamental grasses can provide changing color throughout the growing season.

Color can also be provided by foliage. Utilizing various shapes, sizes, and colors of foliage can ensure interest throughout the year even if the plant is out of bloom.

Repeating the same plants in groups creates a clean and organized appearance. Using too many different varieties can make a landscape look crowded or disconnected.

Always calculate the full size of the landscape plant so the house is not consumed by the plantings during growth cycles, whether it is to cover windows or becomes overgrown for pathways.

Select plants that complement the amount of maintenance you are willing to perform, and with proper mulching, proper edging of beds, and correct amounts of water, the landscape will look neat throughout the year.

Holmes Lawn & Landscape specializes in designing and installing a beautiful, functional landscape that remains appealing through all seasons.

Common Lawn Diseases in Central Indiana

High heat and humid conditions common in Central Indiana provide great growing conditions for disease in the lawn. Browning and thinning turf is not always related to a lack of water or fertilizer but could be signs of injury from fungus, insect pests, poor drainage, or improper mowing.

Common Lawn Diseases

Brown Patch is common in tall fescue and occurs in hot, humid conditions. It results in infected areas that are irregularly shaped and brown.

Dollar Spot will produce small, straw-colored spots which may unite when conditions are moist, and dew is heavy.

Red Thread causes pink or reddish growth on stressed grass, while Lawn Rust leaves an orange powder on grass blades, shoes, or mower tires.

Why Fertilizer May Not Fix It

Our fertilizer program supplies nutrients, enhances color, controls w**ds, and promotes healthy development. Fertilizer does not treat all the diseases of the lawn.
Some problems require a separate fungicide treatment, while others may improve by adjusting watering, mowing height, drainage, or mower blade sharpness. In some cases, applying extra fertilizer can make the disease worse.

If you notice an area of your lawn that is suddenly brown, thinning, or discolored, call Holmes Lawn & Landscape. We offer lawn evaluations and treatment options in the Noblesville and Hamilton County area.
