Wisdom Wednesday:
Winter is coming and it’s time to think through what you should check before the rain, snow and ice hit. Let’s start with some things to do for the outside of the house:
You’ve enjoyed that grill and outdoor furniture. It’s time now to clean it up and either put it away or cover it to so it’s there for the next warm season.
While you’re putting your summer toys away. Take stock of what you will need for the winter. Do you have a snow shovel, an ice scraper, a weather radio, an emergency car kit, flashlight and don’t forget to get those extra batteries? If you have them, make sure they're in usable condition. If you are missing anything, now’s the time to watch for sales.

Wisdom Wednesday:
You're prepped and ready to paint. It’s decision time. What kind of paint do you need? Not what color, what kind. Here’ are a couple of questions to ask yourself. Is this a high traffic area? Think of a durable finish like a Satin. This works well in kitchens and places where children gather. However, it’s not that simple. Does the room get moisture? Fingerprints? Kitchens and bathrooms also get a lot of moisture, so you might consider a semi-gloss for these areas as they are moisture resistant. They're also great for children’s rooms. Eggshell finishes are very popular though they aren’t always the best choice for high traffic/high moisture rooms. They work well for hallways, living rooms and entryways. Next week will go over paint types for ceilings and trim.

Wisdom Wednesday:
You’ve decided to paint your living room, bedroom, bathroom or kitchen or maybe all of them. Here’s a few things you should do before you even start painting. 1. Patch all holes and divots. For small holes use spackle if you have larger holes use dry wall patch. 2. Once dry sand the wall smooth. 3. Lightly scuff the entire wall, it helps the paint adhere better. 4. Make sure the wall is clean and dust free. You can do this by vacuuming the wall and then going over it with a tack cloth. 5. Remove any outlet and switch plate covers. 6. Use painters’ tape along seams that will be a different color.

Wisdom Wednesday:
Most of us have celling and standard fans. These can be used to offset the use of AC and keep our homes cooler when used correctly. For standard fans see if you can have one blowing toward the window and one away from the window setting up a crosscurrent. It cools the room more efficiently than a single fan. If you’re using a ceiling fan, make sure it is running counterclockwise. This will make the room feel about 8 degrees cooler, though it doesn’t actually change the temperature.

Wisdom Wednesday
Keeping your house cool is important during the summer months. We already mentioned how insulation can help. A second thing that can be done is using blackout or thermal curtains. As the sun comes into a room these should be pulled closed to keep the heat out. This can be a very inexpensive way to help reduce your cooling bill and they have the dual purpose of adding beauty to any room. What's more, they don't have to cost a fortune. I found the two pictured below on Amazon. The one on the left was under $20.00. The one on the right was over $200.00. But, you don't need to shop on Amazon, you can find anywhere that sells curtains, including Target and Walmart.
