"Tom Curren Companies does a great job. Most recently, they completed a soffit repair project and a large fence repair and painting project. This included painting a large fire escape. These projects were completed expeditiously, and they all look great." -David B. in Brookline, MA

🛑 Mistake #1: Underestimate what’s involved with the project before starting.
A project can seem straightforward at the start, but many home improvement projects involve layers homeowners don't anticipate, like what's behind a wall, how materials react to New England's humidity swings, or what permits may be required. Starting without a full picture often leads the project to drag out over weeks or months.

🛑 Mistake #2: Skipping permits for electrical, plumbing, and structural work.
Some projects that seem minor, like adding outlets, rerouting plumbing, or altering a wall, actually require permits and inspections. The permitting process is critical for ensuring home safety. Skipping this step can result in code violations and create complications down the road when it's time to sell the home.

🛑 Mistake #3: Ordering the wrong materials or ordering the wrong quantities.
It's easy to underestimate how much paint or tile a project actually needs when you're working off rough estimates. Running short mid-project often means delays while waiting on a reorder, if it's even still available. In addition to inadequate quantities, homeowners are also at risk of ordering the wrong materials, like plumbing fixtures that don't meet state codes or that don't fit into the existing plumbing.

Not sure if your project is DIY-friendly? A quick conversation with our team can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress down the road.

It's National Composites Week 🛠️

Composite materials combine two or more substances, such as wood fibers and recycled plastics, to create a stronger, longer-lasting material than either on its own. Here's why they've become a go-to for New England homeowners:

🔹 Built for New England weather, composites can handle humidity, freeze-thaw cycles, and moisture where traditional wood breaks down after prolonged exposure to these conditions.
🔹 Low maintenance that doesn't require annual staining, sealing, or sanding. An occasional wash will be sufficent for taking care of this material.
🔹 Provides long-term value from skipping years of upkeep and increases home value, offsetting higher upfront cost.
🔹 Consistent look, year after year that resist fading and holds color far longer than natural wood.
🔹 Most composite decking is eco-friendly, made from recycled materials.

If you're planning a deck, railing, or outdoor living space, composites are worth serious consideration. Thinking about making the switch? We'd love to help you figure out what's right for your home.

“We had Tom Curren Companies do a full bathroom gut renovation and couldn't be happier. The work speaks for itself, but what really stood out was how professional and communicative they were throughout. Always on time, always responsive, never left us guessing. It's nice to find a contractor you actually enjoy working with. Highly recommend!”

Thank you, Julie! 🤝
