This is a reminder to check your crawlspace every few months… we were requested to check for possible moisture… what we found was a missing cap to the sewage line and hanging insulation from the duct work courtesy of some critters causing havoc… otherwise the well-formed crawlspace was a perfect humidity of 50°…. A client recently called us frustrated by a persistent, unpleasant smell in their home.

No matter how much they cleaned or aired out the space, the odor wouldn’t go away, and it seemed strongest near a window.

Like many homeowners, they immediately suspected mold, but sometimes the source of a smell isn’t where you expect it.

We take a whole-home approach, we examine a property from top to bottom.

Odors have a way of traveling through walls, ceilings, and ventilation systems, so the source is not always where the smell is strongest. After ruling out the obvious areas, we moved on to the attic.

Up in the attic, we found the real culprit: a dead squirrel.

There was no mold and no moisture problem at all—just an unfortunate animal that had made its way inside and passed away. As unpleasant as it sounds, this is actually a fairly common cause of mysterious household odors.

Rodents, birds, and other small animals can enter attics, wall cavities, or crawlspaces, and when they die, the smell can linger for weeks.

We carefully removed the remains, which immediately addressed the main source of the odor. We then completed an ozone treatment and fog of an odor deadorizer. PROBLEM SOLVED.
