99 year old originally installed slate roof in West Hartford.
Unfading mottled green/ purple slate from the Vermont / New York border.
This was last week, this week I was visiting the quarries where this slate was sourced.

Only about 5% or so of the quarried stone is successfully turned into marketable roof slate.
That means 95% of the stone quarried becomes waste. You can see the mountains of scrap/waste material at the quarry.

Sump Pump Working Overtime!

After the significant rainfall we had last night, this customer's sump pump was cycling on and off, with only about 5 seconds off, before it went on again.
That's moving about ~35 gallons of water per minute, or 2000 gallons per hour.
This was probably just past the peak inflow, and I would expect it to slow down as more hours passed after the rain ended.

That is essentially continuous operation or continuous duty cycle for the peak period.
Interestingly, I only just learned today after researching, that these submersible pumps are actually designed for that. They can run 24/7 as long as the water temperature is lower than 104°, to prevent it from overheating.

Learn something new everyday I guess.

Was telling some young workers at ABC supply that I'm working on a slate roof that was originally installed 147 years ago.
They just rolled their eyes, they probably can't even imagine it's possible since they sell shingles that are rated at 30 years.
This topic comes up from time to time when an insurance company will ask for an evaluation and age estimate of one of our clients roofs.
When I tell them that it's original 100+ years old, they just disregarded and make up some number that's less to satisfy the underwriters.
Here's how we easily prove it to ourselves.

Dinosaur at work on a gravel surfaced BUR, built up roof.
Holy Spirit Church Hall, Newington, CT.

I have at least three more of them to service in the coming weeks. I don't think there's a lot of people still doing this.

Servicing a basement subfloor footing drain system for a customer in Newington today.
Any house, if they have a footing drain system, built before 1960 is going to have these clay pipes under the floor. Most are 3-in, these happen to be 4-in which makes it a lot easier to flush and clean.
The capacity is so much greater, remember the math class we had... When you double the diameter of a circle, the area quadruples.
So going from 3-in to 4 in, is not just a 1/3 or 33% increase in capacity, it's actually ~78% greater capacity.
