The key areas that we believe create the most joy in building a building are -
1. Project Attribution: Everyone gets credit for working on the project. Whether it’s the design architect, the electrician, the construction dumpster driver, whomever is involved. They all had a role and should be encouraged to take credit and have pride in their part.
2. Relationships: From envisioning a project, to designing to constructing a building is a rare and life changing shared experience. Like any relationship, there are ups and downs but if there was ever an arena to make lifelong friends is on a construction job.
3. Technology is a tool: Nothing more and nothing less. It’s great to have a nail gun to optimize your work, if you don’t know where to point it, it’s not very useful.
4. We build society: We don’t build schools, we provide education to children. We don’t build hospitals, we save lives. This is our mission and our joy.
5. Human Centered: Technology is meant to bring us closer, not further away. Imagine doing a monthly project team meeting that included everyone, either in person or via Zoom etc. Just to celebrate the wins and personal contributions to a project.
6. Don’t confuse fun with joy. I can only wish that everyone gets to have fun at work and derive joy. However, we all know that things get sticky, people don’t always get along but at the end of the day with an aligned mission, we ultimately receive joy.😃
