1. Water can seep into the wood
Hardwood is porous, so excess water can soak between the boards and into the grain, leading to swelling, warping, or cupping.

2. It damages the finish
Standing water or overly wet mopping can break down the protective finish, leaving the floor dull and more vulnerable to scratches and stains.

3. Can cause staining or discoloration
Water left on the surface can create dark spots, cloudy patches, or uneven coloring—especially on darker stains.

4. Leads to long-term structural issues
Repeated moisture exposure can weaken the wood over time, potentially causing gaps, loose boards, or even mold underneath.

5. It’s unnecessary
A damp (not wet) microfiber mop or a cleaner specifically made for hardwood floors does a better job without the risk.
