Matthew 22:1–14 contains the Parable of the Wedding Banquet (also called the Parable of the Wedding Feast), spoken by Jesus to explain the kingdom of heaven.
Key Events in the Parable
• The First Invitation: A king prepares a wedding banquet for his son and sends his servants to call those previously invited, but they refuse to come.
• The Second Call: The king sends more servants to explain that the meal is ready, but the invitees make light of it—some go to their farms or businesses, while others seize, abuse, and kill the servants.
• The King’s Retaliation: Enraged, the king sends his army to destroy those murderers and burn down their city.
• The Broad Invitation: The king tells his servants that the original guests were not worthy, instructing them to go to the street corners and invite everyone they find, both bad and good, until the banquet hall is full.
• The Man Without a Wedding Garment: When the king inspects the guests, he finds a man not wearing wedding clothes. The man is speechless when asked how he entered. The king orders his attendants to bind him hand and foot and throw him outside into the darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
• The Conclusion: Jesus summarizes the lesson with the statement: "For many are invited, but few are chosen."
