Last Thursday was a big day in the South Bronx! We celebrated the ribbon cutting of the Earl Monroe New Renaissance Basketball High School.

Located in a district with New York City’s highest poverty rates, this 69,000 SF, tuition-free public charter school is designed around the eco-system of basketball, introducing students to the many career paths the game offers beyond the court.

It was an honor to mark this milestone alongside basketball legend Earl Monroe and other New York Knicks icons. We look forward to seeing the school become a lasting resource for its students and the surrounding community!

Bedford Green House has been selected as a 2026 AIA Tri-State Design Award winner!

The AIA Tri-State Design Awards celebrate design excellence and the ways thoughtful design can make a meaningful difference in our communities across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

AIA Pennsylvania / AIA New York State / AIA New Jersey

Located in the Bronx’s Bedford Park neighborhood, Bedford Green House is a two-phase affordable and supportive housing project designed for Project Renewal. More than a place to live, the project was envisioned as a sustainable, connected community, bringing together biophilic spaces and aging-in-place strategies to support connection, safety, and healthy living.

Congratulations to everyone who brought this project to life!

We were glad to see our longtime client, Bowery Residents’ Committee (BRC), featured in The New Yorker.

For decades, BRC has helped strengthen the fabric of New York City by creating pathways from homelessness to stable housing. We’re proud to play a small part in their work and grateful to see more attention brought to what they contribute to the city.
Our work with BRC includes the Apartments at Landing Road and Reaching New Heights Residence in the Bronx, which helped inaugurate an innovative new model of public funding. Today, BRC continues to explore new, site-specific approaches, including the Inwood Memorial, now in development as part of ESKW/A’s Inwood Women’s Residence.

We closed out the summer in true ESKW/A style: soaking in the last golden rays with great food and even better company. Huge thanks to our Office Manager, Lauretta DaCruz, who once again opened her building’s rooftop and hosted us all. Shoutout to our Grill Masters, Randy Wood and Carlos Weber, who tended the flames and kept everyone fed.

Between bites, we took a moment to celebrate just how much we’ve grown. We’re now 47 people strong!
This year, we welcomed some wonderful new faces: Architects Mahsa Dehgani, Emma Weiss and Katie Lau; Architectural Designer Rebecca Lausen; and our new Controller, Vanessa Lara.

With a growing team comes growing leadership needs. This year, the partners announced the promotions of Winnie Moy and Cary Trochesset from Senior Project Managers to Associates. A well-deserved recognition of their years of leadership, dedication, and contributions to the firm.

We also raised a glass to Associate Kerry Zucker, who celebrated an incredible 20 years with the firm this year. Thank you, Kerry!

Last week the office hosted a blind baguette tasting competition. Staff brought in their favorite loaf from their go-to bakery, and votes were cast on crust, crumb, and overall baguette integrity. Very serious business. Very buttery stakes. And the results are in!

• 1st Place: Miolin Bakery | miolin bakery
• 2nd Place: La Bicyclette Bakery (Fort Greene)
• 3rd Place: La Bicyclette Bakery (Not in Fort Greene)

But this wasn’t just about bragging rights. We’re carb loading with purpose, in support of our three staff members running the NYC Marathon this November: Architectural Designers, Alexandra and Wade and Architect, Valerie!

Extra special shoutout to Valerie and Alexandra, who are running on behalf of two of our clients: Providence House and Odyssey House. Talk about running for something bigger than a finish line.

So, here’s to 26.2 miles, perfectly crunchy crusts, and a firm belief that the best fuel for a marathon is a well-judged baguette. Go, Alexandra, Valerie and Wade! We’re behind you (and slightly ahead of you in bread consumption).

From the Archives: St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery Rectory.

Some projects aren’t just jobs; they are relationships spanning decades. ESKW/Architects had already spent years restoring St. Mark’s Church, Church Yards, and the Rectory’s exterior before the interior finally came calling.

Designed in 1900 by Ernest Flagg, the Rectory stood proudly in the St. Mark’s Historic District until a 1988 fire gutted its interior. The exterior was restored by 1991 but inside, the landmark sat vacant, waiting for its second act.

That act meant threading building-wide HVAC invisibly through historic rooms, rebuilding nearly 75% of one room’s ornate plaster crown from fire-damaged fragments, hand-matching woodwork to century-old profiles, and testing 40+ paint samples for the right palette. Outside, the cast-iron stoop on 11th Street was restored to its mid-century detail, and a crumbling concrete stair at the Church Yard entrance was replaced with brownstone and new cast-iron railings.

In 1999, the Neighborhood Preservation Center opened its doors, becoming one of the first resources of its kind in NYC. The Rectory had found its purpose again, and NPC had found its home: by 2001, over 4,000 New Yorkers had walked through, with organizations like the Historic District Council and Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation calling it theirs too. For two decades, the space held that role until 2020, when NPC evolved into a virtual hub for community preservation citywide.

St. Anselm’s Apartments opened to residents earlier this summer, bringing 126 affordable homes to Mott Haven, Bronx.

Developed by Catholic Homes New York and Nazareth Housing, the building offers 62 homes for households earning 40-70% AMI, alongside supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals, families, and domestic abuse survivors.

Rising 12 stories and 112,500 SF, St. Anselm’s joins the SHPO-designated Church of St. Anselm and St. Roch and St. Anselm School, adding housing to a campus long rooted in service to its neighborhood. Height Factor Zoning allowed for a taller, slenderer volume with a smaller footprint, giving the ground back to green space and a welcoming street presence.

Earlier this month, Associate Kerry Zucker, AIA took the stage for Built by Women Pecha Kucha, sharing the story of PS32K and the women who helped bring it to life.

From design through construction, PS32K was shaped by a team of women across architecture, structural engineering, landscape, construction, and the NYC School Construction Authority. The result is a school addition that feels genuinely gracious to the community it serves.

We’re grateful to BWAF and co-host Arup in the Americas for creating a platform to celebrate this kind of collaboration, and to Kerry for representing our team and this project so well.

Meet our summer intern, Melisa Alatas!

Melisa is a rising fifth-year architecture student (B. Arch) at Pratt Institute, having just completed her fourth year in the program. Originally from Istanbul and Izmir, Turkey, she now calls Brooklyn home while studying at Pratt. Architecture wasn’t always the plan; she considered everything from painting to particle physics before discovering architects like Norman Foster and artists like Olafur Eliasson, whose work showed her how design could connect art, science, technology, and human experience.

At Pratt, Melisa has been drawn to projects where architecture responds to environmental challenges while strengthening community. Among her most meaningful: a resilient mixed-use housing proposal for a flood-prone site in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and the Flushing Bay Floating Houses, a climate-adaptive waterfront concept for Queens envisioning a floating neighborhood built on Passive House principles and ecological restoration.
This summer, Melisa contributed to projects across residential, educational, and community typologies — including 1772 2nd Avenue, the Queens Zoo Educational Center, Coney Landing, and St. Anselm’s Apartments—gaining hands-on experience with Revit, construction documentation, and design development. She points to the mentorship and collaboration with the ESKW/A team as one of the most rewarding parts of her summer, deepening her understanding of how projects move from concept to the built environment.

Beyond the studio, Melisa soaked up NYC’s culture (and cheered on Turkey ⚽ during the World Cup!), exploring Isamu Noguchi’s work and the Richard Gilder Center in between projects.
