As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating a significant milestone for the Bronx HEArts Center as construction is officially underway!
The project builds on a powerful history of Puerto Rican and Latino community activism in the South Bronx. Designed by BKSK, the new 27,000-square-foot community hub transforms the long-vacant former Lincoln Recovery Center into a community-led hub for health, environmental education, arts, and workforce development.
The site also carries the legacy of the Young Lords, who occupied the building in 1970 as part of their fight for medical self-determination and greater access to healthcare for Latino communities in the South Bronx.
The renovation preserves the building’s historic character while introducing sustainable upgrades, restored skylights, a new green roof, and outdoor spaces that connect the Center to the surrounding parks.
Led by South Bronx Unite and the Mott Haven-Port Morris Community The Land Stewards, the HEArts Center will bring together spaces for the arts, education, and community health, and green jobs—including a performance theater, practice rooms, culinary arts kitchen, and workforce training spaces.
We’re proud to be part of a project rooted in the history and leadership of the South Bronx, and to see that legacy continue into what comes next.
