MESH + LIGHT 03 The Transforming Surface

A material that changes from day to night.

The mesh facade of the Burberry flagship in Seoul transforms with the presence of light.

During the day, it acts as a delicate architectural scrim , softening the building while revealing the layers behind it.

As the sun sets, light shifts the perception of the material, turning the facade into an illuminated surface with depth, texture, and presence.

A reminder that materials are never static.
They are activated by light.

MESH + LIGHT 01 Creating Depth

What happens when the ceiling becomes more than a surface?

For this confidential tech office in Manhattan, a layer of mesh transforms the ceiling into an atmospheric element.

Linear luminaires mounted above the mesh disappear from view, while color-changing uplight reveals the hidden depth above, creating a sense of movement, energy, and curiosity.

Light is no longer only illuminating the space.
It becomes part of the material itself.

1899 Penn + Layers of Light

Light is often most powerful in the details.

At 1899 Penn, carefully coordinated downlights, glowing coves, and integrated millwork illumination create a quiet balance between function and atmosphere.

The goal was not for lighting to become the feature, but to support the architectural experience — revealing materiality, creating depth, and shaping the way people move through the space.

1899 Penn + Designing the First Impression

Only three blocks from the White House, 1899 Penn explores the moment where city and interior meet.

Through the glass façade, layers of light invite curiosity from the street and reveal moments of warmth, texture, and human scale within. Soft illumination emerges from architectural details, integrated coves, and custom millwork, creating an arrival experience shaped through light.

For Jacob Riis Bathhouse, we looked to the qualities that make the shoreline unforgettable, the rhythm of waves, the changing textures of sand and concrete, and the interplay of light across surfaces throughout the day.

These early concept studies helped shape a lighting approach rooted in place, materiality, and experience.

A full-scale mockup developed to study a custom perimeter cove condition. The complexity of the form required precise 3D printing to accurately evaluate geometry, light distribution, and constructability before fabrication.

Testing details at this stage allows us to refine the relationship between light, surface, and architecture long before installation.
