Model studies for a recent proposal exploring how a crystalline “solid” volume can transform light and movement. Sunlight refracts through the prismatic structure, casting shifting fields of color across the surrounding plaza. Underneath, intersecting arches follow the site’s pedestrian routes and view axes, creating a vaulted space where light filters through a constellation of perforations overhead.

Part stone, part crystal, part kaleidoscope.

Here are a few test shots of Pulse, one of four interactive installations we created this summer as part of the transformation of Edge, which includes seven new immersive installations throughout the experience!

We’ve been busy creating four of our most ambitious projects to date, and we’re excited to finally start sharing them with everyone.

Pulse is made up of 450 glowing globes that fill the space with constantly shifting fields of color. As visitors move through the installation, they trigger pulses of white light that ripple outward like stones dropped into a pond. These overlapping ripples interact with one another, creating an ever-changing landscape of light that reflects the energy and interconnectedness of New York City.

We’re excited to share that SOFTlab was selected as a finalist for a new public artwork commission by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for the Peace Culture Bunker. Once a former military bunker, the site has been transformed into a creative hub for the local community in Dobong-gu, and we’re honored to have contributed to its ongoing evolution.

The competition called for a landmark artwork that conceptually framed the creative hub through the theme “Afterimages of Peace.” Our proposal wraps the observation tower in a lenticular skin of colored lenses that create shifting visual afterimages of the surrounding landscape through chromatic exposure. As visitors move around the tower, the work continuously reframes the environment, transforming perception into a reflection on memory, change, and peace.

Video of our recent project, Afterimage, in Brea, CA. made of acrylic “pixels” formed from digitally interlaced images of the Brea Hills create a shifting map of the surrounding landscape. At night, edge lighting and atmospheric animations bring the installation to life, evoking the sensation of wind moving through the hills themselves.

Recent photos of Afterimage, our first wall-based public artwork, commissioned by Simon for the expansion of Brea Mall in Southern California. The translucent acrylic pixels are created by compositing photographs of the Brea Hills into a layered field that shifts between landscape and abstraction as visitors move past the work. At night, integrated LED fixtures animate the surface with shifting light and color. Video coming soon. Photos

A couple of clips from the final review of Design Computation Seminar: Margins of Error at

Students created interactive objects using the motion capture system at to generate live drawings in Processing, exploring how bodies, objects, and computation can shape space in real time. The projects moved between the physical and digital in strange, playful, and unexpected ways — part performance, part instrument, part experiment.

Really proud of the work and energy in the room. Great job by the students. Special thanks to and for their thoughtful and insightful comments throughout the review.

Finally got around to making a short video of one of the faceted modules we typically use, clad in dichroic acrylic. This module is lit from within using a single white LED globe, but the way the color and reflectivity shifts across each facet depending on angle and rotation still feels a little unreal!
