The lighting design for the Brooklyn Public Library – Ryder Branch renovation was driven by a vision to create a modern, sustainable public library that supports the evolving needs of the community. Working closely with the architectural and design team, the lighting strategy was developed to enhance the library’s contemporary architecture while creating a welcoming environment for learning, collaboration, and community gathering. Layered, energy-efficient lighting improves visual comfort, flexibility, and wayfinding throughout the renovated civic space, supporting everything from quiet reading areas to active community spaces and children’s environments.
A defining feature of the project is the installation of large custom circular luminaires that create a striking visual identity within the library interior. These oversized diffused fixtures provide soft ambient illumination while serving as a key architectural element that anchors the ceiling plane. Throughout the library, lighting acts as a unifying design element, balancing function, sustainability, and user experience to support the evolving needs of the community for years to come.
