MY INSTALLATION 'SPACES FOR SPONTANEOUS SINGING'
IS A FINALIST FOR THE 2022 ARCHITIZER + AWARDS in the category of 'ARCHITECTURE PLUS JOY

OPEN FOR PUBLIC VOTING THROUGH FRIDAY, MAY 27
https://www.architizerawards.com/a/page/vote-now

If you feel inclined to vote, search for the category of 'Architecture Plus Joy', and you will find my installation there.

SPACES FOR SPONTANEOUS SINGING’, a temporary installation, built for the 2019 LA Design Festival, invokes the ‘Purpose of Joy’, as a reframed response to the festival theme, ‘Design with Purpose’.‘

It brings the activity of uninhibited singing from the privacy of one’s shower, to a public street parking lot, in a dedicated urban, mini ‘singing shower park’. In play and joy, vulnerable boundaries between private and public behaviors dissolve. Using an ‘authorized’ play setting for all ages, it additionally explores ideas about belonging - where and how we feel comfortable to express joy, where we hide, and where we test our private face in public.

Inspired by the context of Los Angeles, the home of performance, the installation is designed as an intergenerational experience, for individual singing, or for couples, families or friends to sing together. Intermingled seating encourages an audience. Sited on a 20’x40’ area of a parking lot, the design includes 12 circular, micro ‘stage’ shower bases, stanchions of varying heights for adults and children, semi-enclosed privacy screens and custom seating. Each waterless shower has a handheld shower ‘microphone’. The circular language of perforated shower head holes, at varying scales, is a pattern motif for the showers, stages and seating. Privacy screen components transform into light fixtures at night. Post installation, the seating was delivered to a homeless encampment.

When we say mother tongue, what does it mean?
Is it the spoken language of home, the language of parents, ancestors, and country of origin?
Is it the language of place, the root that is carried, a connection to heritage, traditions, people, music, rituals, religion, and the DNA of a particular ethnic experience?  ‘Mother Tongue’ merges the past and present, a sometimes invisible gift of identity, particularly when displaced in another land.

Felema Yemaneberhan grew up in Los Angeles, but throughout her childhood she was brought back to another home, in Eritrea, north of Ethiopia, a country traumatized by Italian colonization and Civil War. In the US, before the age of 5, she only spoke Tigrinya, the language of her ancestral home, a place where her parents still anticipate returning. To listen to my conversation with Felema, listen at your preferred podcast directory to the Whereing podcast.

My conversation with Loukia covers her various multi-disciplinary projects. We first speak about the book she has edited and curated, titled 'Transient Spaces', and her devotion to exploring belonging for migrant and refugee populations. Her other works examine the connections between design, technology and science, specifically the human body, and its sensory interactions with objects and place. A project we speak about is an installation now being exhibited at the the Venice Biennale, called ‘Synesthesia'. New Episode!
HOME ON STAGE: Lori Kirstein

As a child, Lori felt most at home sitting and napping under her mother’s baby grand piano. She says, when her mother played, ‘the notes rained down on me, and became a part of my flesh’. A multi-talented force herself, Lori experienced a period of homelessness, which has shaped her creative process. When Lori speaks about home, she speaks about the ‘molten lava of truth’, rather than rigid structure. Home, in the most positive and present sense, is not ‘Pleasantville’. We speak about finding and building home.
