Marvel Designs

Marvel Designs Marvel This ethos defines our practice and drives our work. Our strength comes from working with a diversity of clients. Marvel is an MBE firm.

Marvel was formed out of the idea that architecture and design have the potential to define and enhance the human relationship, to each other and to our environment. Our studio – home to architects, urban planners, interior designers, and landscape architects – is unified by the ardent belief that architecture and design should be used to build community and improve public life. At Marvel, we reco

gnize the built environment as a powerful and unique tool because of its potential to resolve socioeconomic, environmental, and civic dilemmas in visceral and enduring ways. We are dedicated to shaping public space, progressing civic equality, designing for institutional growth, and expanding economic and creative opportunities for a wide range of clients. We believe the greatest potential for design innovation is inherent to projects in hyper-varied environments with complex existing conditions. This motive has become our strength – earning Marvel a national reputation for designing at the intersection of public and private space. Our diverse portfolio of work and track record of success can be summed up in two words: collaboration and context. We apply the same meticulous attention to detail to all scales and forms, with the resulting projects and spaces earning our reputation for sensitive and thoughtful design. Projects such as New Lab and Building 77 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, as well as St. Ann’s Warehouse, Pierhouse and 1 Hotel in Brooklyn Bridge Park establish a dialogue between open space and building structures that promotes institutional strength and fosters community engagement. Our multi-disciplinary studios collaborate throughout the design and construction processes to meet our clients’ fiscal and programmatic requirements, be it to efficiently address an immediate need or develop a long-term strategy for phased growth. We are experienced at tackling a variety of challenges with innovative design solutions, as well as transforming ordinary projects into remarkable ones. After more than twenty years working in New York City and across the country, our team has developed a unique approach to contextually sensitive, research-based architecture and place-making that has been recognized by more than 70 design and industry awards.

This week, the Marvel team headed uptown to visit our project at 1769 Jerome Avenue in the Bronx. Set to open in early 2022, this development includes 175 affordable and supportive housing units, in addition to three commercial spaces on the first floor.

Site visits serve as a strong moment of contextualization, as all the drawings and renderings begin to take shape in a way that can only be experienced in person.

The Red Creek Road Residence was recently featured as one of the ten best homes in the Hamptons by .

This house showcases stunning views of both the Great Peconic Bay and the surrounding forest. The expansive horizon can be viewed from the cedar-clad breezeway, inviting the visitor to emerge from the forest towards the bay. A double-height living room, unique windows, and balconies offer direct connections to moments in the forest and the Bay, embracing the dual landscapes that this property features.

Introducing Bloom on Fifth.

The seven-story building keeps within the neighborhood’s low-rise scale, adding fresh bold aesthetics with its sculptural concrete and geometric glass composition. The centerpiece of the building is its interior elevated courtyard, an urban oasis conceived as a nod to the nature of Central Park within the grid of Manhattan. As noted in a recent press release, it is “beautifully landscaped with a variety of plants and full-size trees, including three honey locust trees”. Many of the residences’ oversized windows and private terraces look out onto this lush interior retreat. Two additional rooftop common terraces with outdoor kitchens and plantings offer views of Hell’s Kitchen and the New York skyline beyond.

profiled TheatreSquared, Marvel’s world class theatre in Fayetteville, Arkansas in their third episode of a new video series. They explored the differences in how the Architect/Designer and the Builder see a project as it moves from an idea to the construction phase and then a finished structure.

Each episode features a different residential or commercial project with interviews from architects, designers, project managers, and more as they walk you through the project from their point of view. Ben Roberts, Host and Producer, discusses the design process in this episode of Design vs. Build.

: “Tucked away in the rolling hills of Northwest Arkansas is a world-class theatre dedicated to creating in-house productions for an intimate and inclusive environment. When it came time to expand, they landed a once-in-a-lifetime grant from the Walton Family Foundation, giving them the opportunity to work with world-renowned architects and theatre designers to create the perfect space.

A week ago Marvel was invited by NY Magazine’s to develop and illustrate ideas for memorials that commemorate the one year anniversary of the NYC COVID pause. The idea was to pair a design firm with a New Yorker to bring to life their vision or memories of this past year. Marvel was paired up with Maria Antonia “Toñita” Cay, the owner of Williamsburg’s famous Caribbean Social Club.

Inspired by Toñita, Marvel designed a commemorative “Container of Joy” and the “Caribbean Social Block” as a COVID-19 memorial. The Social Block pedestrianizes a block of Grand Street with permanent “streeteries” on portions of the sidewalk that are bumped out into former parking spaces, claiming auto space for pedestrian activity.

The concept illustrates the celebratory atmosphere of Toñita’s outside and honors the social club inside. “[The club] is about the sense of community that she creates within that space,” says Yadiel Rivera-Díaz, a partner and landscape architect at Marvel. “It feels like being in the living room or dining room of one of your tias back in Puerto Rico. It’s just very welcoming.” We can’t wait for the return of Toñita’s muchachitos and to extend to the block the feeling of “pure joy” that comes from sharing a space with friends and neighbors.

The show must go on!

Back in the summer of 2020, Marvel designed a quick-deployment street theater, called "Broadway Outdoors," made of shipping containers and elevated from the street to let traffic pass underneath; a solution that looked to revive the city with outdoor cultural opportunities neighborhood by neighborhood.

Today, we are teaming up with the Van Allen Institute and the Urban Design Forum as part of their Neighborhoods Now series, and paired up with small neighborhood arts organizations to create temporary outdoor venues and figure out how to attract audiences big enough to provide a communal experience yet small enough to be safe.

(Image ID: Marvel’s design for a reimagined 45th Street pop-up theater in Times Square, an elevated shipping-container based stage with street-level room for the orchestra underneath the elevated stage with rows of audience seating facing the orchestra. The whole setup is nestled between two blocks of temporarily shuttered theaters.)

Last week’s site visit to El Portal revealed exciting progress.

The El Portal Visitor’s Center is an entryway into the El Yunque National Forest that is not only a threshold to be crossed but a place to linger and even return to. EL Portal is an iconic building in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico that will focus on educational and interactive materials about the rainforest and the region at large. The facility includes a renovated theater, two levels of interactive educational materials, visitor resources and community spaces.

Marvel is working on this design-build revitalization project with the USDA Forest Service, and Interlink Construction, a local Puerto Rican construction management and development firm, to revitalize and bring back to life both the building and surrounding site of this important cultural anchor on the island.
