After 30 years of installing smart home systems in $10M apartments, one thing is consistent:

Cheap smart homes show up on the walls.

Banks of plastic dimmers.
Different sizes.
Crooked spacing.
Yellowing in two years.

A proper lighting control system looks different.

Single-gang keypads.
Clean spacing.
Metal or glass finishes that don’t age.

One button: Party.
One button: All Off.
No guesswork.

You can spend $500,000 finishing a home.

Or ruin the walls with plastic.

The difference?

About $50,000 upfront.
And 20 years of not regretting it.

Last week I walked into a home and refused the job.

The homeowner had spent about $10,000 on smart switches from Amazon and hired a cheap installer she found on Instagram. They added motorized shades from a random overseas supplier and stitched the whole thing together.

The installer disappeared.

Nothing worked.

Even after 30 years in this industry, I couldn’t make sense of what they built.

At that point there’s only one honest answer:
it all has to come out.

Cheap smart home systems don’t save money. They just delay the real cost.

That $10,000 “deal” is now a $30,000 correction.

Most homeowners are sold the idea that “more devices” equals better automation.

It doesn’t.

Fifty Wi-Fi switches means fifty independent devices competing on your network.
Fifty possible failure points.
Fifty chances something drops offline.

A professional lighting control system works differently.

One processor.
Hardwired keypads.
Measured response times.
Decades of stability.

When that processor fails, which is rare, there’s a backup.

Wi-Fi devices fall off networks constantly.

So when you’re standing in the dark at 3:00AM, ask yourself:

Was saving $40,000 worth the instability?

A homeowner spent $10,000 on smart switches from Amazon.

Hired a cheap installer off Instagram.

Imported motorized shades from Korea.

Nothing worked.

Even I couldn’t make sense of it, and I’ve been doing this for 30 years.

The truth?

Cheap systems don’t save you money.

They make you buy twice.

Her “$10,000 deal” is now a $30,000 correction.

Before you try to save on installation, ask yourself:
Can you afford to pay twice?

Comment UPGRADE if you’d rather do it right the first time.

Smart home automation isn’t about gadgets.

It’s about designing systems that disappear into daily life.

Lighting that follows circadian rhythm.
Shades that move silently.
Audio that never drops mid-conversation.

The technology isn’t the hard part.

Designing it around human behavior is.

Comment SMART HOME if automation should feel invisible.

There’s always a bucket.
It’s full of smart switches that were:

• Installed
• Ripped out
• Replaced

$30. $100. Doesn’t matter.

They watched a few YouTube videos.
Three months later:

Half the switches won’t connect.
The app crashes.
Lights turn on at 3AM.

Now it’s midnight support chats
and buying a different brand to “try again.”

That’s not savings.

That’s a pile of plastic in a bucket.

A real smart home system, installed properly, doesn’t need constant fixing.

When it’s done right, the phone doesn’t ring.

I call it the bucket.

Every DIY smart home automation eventually ends up with one.

It’s where all the “cheap smart switches” go after they stop working.

Different brands. Different apps. Different problems.

People start with a few YouTube videos and a box of gadgets. A few months later they’re troubleshooting at midnight and replacing parts again.

A properly designed smart home system doesn’t need constant fixing.

Because when it’s built right, the phone doesn’t ring.

Comment SMART HOME if you want to build it once.

When someone tells me,
“I’ll just use Alexa switches and a few smart dimmers,”
I already know what they’re missing.

It’s not about saving money.

It’s about what luxury actually feels like.

Scrolling through pages of switches isn’t luxury.

Luxury is:
One button at night.
An entire floor shuts down.

One press.
The whole house shifts mood.

Not 10 apps.
Not adjusting thermostats one by one.

In 30 years, not one client has called and said,
“I should’ve gone with the cheap Alexa setup.”

Not one.

If you want automation that feels like $10M living,
build it like it matters.

Comment SMART HOME if simplicity is the real flex.
