We are proud to announce that SCAPE is the recipient of the 2025 Landscape Architecture Firm Award. This year, with the theme "Beyond Boundaries" the American Society of Landscape Architects is highlighting how landscape architects break barriers—physical, cultural, and environmental—to shape a better future. For the past 20 years, SCAPE has carved a unique path through the field of landscape architecture. Today we are a robust practice with offices in New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco and over 80 people, holding strong to our values of climate resilience, community action, and ecological regeneration. We are so grateful for this recognition of our work and our ethos.

We are thrilled to announce that SCAPE’s Design Principal, Gena Wirth, will be elevated to the American Society of Landscape Architects Council of Fellows!

The Fellowship is among the highest honors bestowed by ASLA and recognizes the sustained contributions of a select group of landscape architects to their profession and society. Gena is being recognized in the Works category, demonstrating mastery of the art, stewardship, science, and social responsibility of landscape architecture, through works both built and adopted.

"Gena Wirth's longstanding commitment to progressive design practice has produced visionary projects in the public realm, connecting social equity, climate resilience, and ecosystem health. Her mentorship has inspired a new generation of students and practitioners. From advancing resilience work at SCAPE, to developing new methods of public outreach, to envisioning flux with the Dredge Research Collaborative, Gena has shaped a disciplinary approach to design research across systems and scales, from tiny pollinators to vast watersheds." - Catherine Seavitt Nordenson, FASLA, FAIA

Malt Drive Park in Long Island City, Queens is now open to the public!

Named for the former beer distribution center that once occupied the site, Malt Drive Park is a key piece in a network of waterfront spaces along the East River and Newtown Creek in Hunter's Point South. The park features a range of amenities for parkgoers to enjoy, including social seating and play structures, a civic grove and dog run, an open lawn with expansive views of the water, and industrial artifacts reclaimed during construction.

Today, we’re celebrating a big milestone: Governor Kathy Hochul announced the completion of Living Breakwaters.

“Climate adaptation for the next century requires bold thinking on how people and nature can coexist in cities, and resilient design that combines nature-based infrastructure and community stewardship,” said Kate Orff, SCAPE Founding Principal. “Living Breakwaters revives our harbor ecosystems, reduces risk, and inspires action. This project has been 10 years in the making and has involved hundreds of dedicated collaborators and community members. I’m excited to build on what we’ve learned together to accelerate implementation of nature-based infrastructure at many scales to meet the moment.”

Living Breakwaters consists of eight breakwaters off the South Shore of Staten Island that are designed to attenuate waves, combat erosion, and reduce risk to the community along the shoreline. They also provide a range of habitat spaces for oysters, fin fish and other marine species.
