Dear community,
I hope this message finds you safe and well. We all must stay vigilant, especially when it comes to online transactions. The NYPD has recently reported a series of robberies linked to Facebook Marketplace, and it's alarming.
Here's the scoop: Two individuals are posing as car sellers on Facebook Marketplace, but their intentions are far from genuine. They've targeted potential buyers or sellers at least nine times across the Bronx and Queens, employing weapons like guns, metal bats, and even sticks with nails in them during the robberies. These incidents have occurred since December, with the most recent one reported on May 7.
What's particularly concerning is that the victims met these suspects after arranging to buy or sell a car on Facebook Marketplace. In some instances, they've gotten away with large sums of cash or stolen the victims' cars.
To ensure your safety during online transactions, here are some tips from the authorities:
Always choose a public and safe location for the exchange, such as a police precinct parking lot.
Take advantage of the e-commerce locations provided by the NYPD, equipped with surveillance cameras for added security.
Consider using online platforms for financial transactions rather than carrying cash.
Be cautious of red flags on Facebook profiles, like incomplete information or suspicious behavior.
Remember, your safety is paramount. If you notice anything suspicious or have any information regarding these incidents, please don't hesitate to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
Let's look out for one another and stay safe out there!
Best regards,
Security Hawk
